Best CPU for <$140?

On a budget, currently running a crappy athlon dual core.. Was wondering whats the best CPU I could get for around $140? I was looking at the 1045t, fx-6100, and the 965.. any suggestions?

And please dont give me a link to something over $140. That is my limit, no more.

More about best
  1. 965 BE and OC it (assuming this is for gaming).
  2. Okay thanks for your opinion, anyone else have an opinion? Anyone else recommend the 965 BE?
  3. Or, if you want to go with new technology, you can get this:
    AMD FX-6100 Zambezi 3.3GHz Socket AM3+ 95W Six-Core Desktop Processor FD6100WMGUSBX

  4. So im upgrading my mobo/cpu/ram, and this is what I have so far...

Will those all work together? Im on a budget, keep that in mind, thats why im going for lower ranged stuff. I am currently on a dual core, so this IS an upgrade for me.

Yes, I was looking at the 6100's, and people were telling me not to mess with bulldozer..
  6. Nothing wrong with bulldozer. It's just a matter of what you compare it to. Bulldozer is fine, and long as your not comparing it to i5's and the like.

Hmm, well what if we compare the 965 BE, with the FX6100? What is best bang for my buck? 965 is $120, 6100 is $140..
  8. Can you find any comparatives of the 965 vs the 6100? That would go a long way in helping decide. I'm not sure how they stack up against one another.
  9. For gaming phenom is better. Bulldozer, when OCed uses much more power.
    Look at this thread.

  10. there is a handful of applications the bulldozer will do better than the PII. there are a handful of games that the PII will do better than the bulldozer. take a read of this review and decide:
AMD FX-8120, AMD FX-6100 and AMD FX-4100 CPUs Review
  11. Okay, well then the 965 it is.. now one more question.. Would these ram and mobo work with the 965BE?

  12. No go on the memory. You chose 1.65 volt memory, and you need 1.50 volt memory.
  13. I think tigerdirect still has a Phenom II x6 on sale for $110, they lowered the price the same day I received my 945 in the mail from them, since it was running well I didn't want to push my luck my returning it.

So the 965 WILL work with that mobo though?

    And what about this ram?

  15. That ram will work, and it is compatible with the MB you selected, as is the CPU compatible with both the memory and MB.
  16. Okay thank you...

Quick questions.. What is your opinion on the i5 2400, compared to the 965? I could get the i5 2400, with the H61 mobo, for around the same price..
  17. I like the i5 better, but putting it on such a low end MB such as the H61 is a real crime. Better off just sticking to the 965
  18. So you dont think it would be worth getting this instead?

Would those 3 work together? It was the same price pretty much as the combo before I posted. I mean, I only need 1 pci e slot, and 2 ram slots.. dont really need anything more, im a casual gamer, dont need anything crazy....
  19. That Biostar MB is really just a piece of cr*p. You need to set you sights a little higher and invest in a quality board from Gigabyte or Asus.

    What about

    ?
  21. Actually, what about this motherboard, with the i5 2400?

That's more like it. Still a bargain basement board, but at least made by a reputable manufacturer.
  23. What about the second one I posted? Whats your opinion on ASRock? It has better reviews on newegg then the gigabye one..

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157236
  24. I personally don't recommend asrock after having experienced the thinness of their motherboards first hand. They are just not sturdily made. It does have a nice feature set though.
  25. Well, I decided to go with the i5 2400, with the Gigabyte H61.. I dont think I will be disappointed coming from a Athlon x2 5200+
  26. I'm sure you won't be disappointed. Enjoy your new stuff.
