My build. i5-2500k Processor, and GIGABYTE MOBO: http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml...

Now, is the 7970 overkill for these games?: BF3, MW3, MW2, MW1, Half-Life, Half-Life 2, Counterstrike, half-Life 3, DBZ Budokai, DBZ utlimate battle 22, rs, skyrim, black ops.

If so, what card would be not overkill?

You have skyrim and Bf3 listed. This card is not overkill for those 2 games. Half life 3 should need decent graphics too. However if you buy a CPU+motherboard at microcenter they will send you a coupon after 1-2 weeks for 20% off on memory, Video cards..yes, computer case, and PSu. Yes all separate coupons in your email. Remember that once you open the coupon in the email you must print it on the spot. You cannot close out and reopen it.

You really need to use the one for video card and get yourself this card. It will cost you less than $350. A GTX 580. Now if you can get the 7970 for 20% off then thats an even better deal.

Lets say none of this works out then I recommend waiting for the 7950 in February or 7870 from March. Both will be good for your games at 1080P.

Alright, thanks. I wish I knew about the coupon before I finalized parts at newegg...

EDIT: My budget is $1500 and without the GPU it sits at about $950.

With that budget, I'd consider getting the 7970 myself. It will certainly max out those games you mentioned and would be a solid card for 2 years+. Its really not a bad deal, its about $50 or so higher than the GTX 580 but up to 15 to 20% faster. I also hear that its a great overclocker so that good too. Plus runs cooler than a 580, pretty much a superior card all around. Finding one right now is the biggest pb I see.

Basically to max out BF3 at 1080p a GTX 470 is the minimum requirement. An HD 6970 is barely capable of doing so. A GTX 580 is better, also there are sure to be a few graphics intensive games being released in the next couple of years that will go beyond that high water mark. So if having a PC that can run anything you want with all details maxed is a goal, the card is a good choice. Only you can decide if its overkill or not.
