I have a Sapphire ATI 9800 pro, 128 meg version.
I was a long time 3dfx/Nvidia guy and I'm very happy with my first ATI.

I have the X800 and personally I will NEVER go back to Nvidia, the radeon
cards are far better, higher scoring cards on various games, take a look at
Toms Hardware for recommendations!

got a problem with mine - very same card... be sure to check the two little
plastic pins that hold the active cooler/heatsink assembly - on my system
one of them failed, so I fried the chipset...

Pro or XT version, been looking at my next upgrade and can't decide if I
should go all the way with a new AMD 64, with PCI express and X800 XT, or
just upgrade my 9700 Pro to the AGP X800 Pro/XT. Wondering how the 12/16
pipelines really affect performance, as various benchmarks a close and the
only real test is in game testing not benchmarks.

I don't think you will see mutch difference yet. I have the XT, it's more
power than you need for current games.

My budget is modest. Around $100. Need a PCI slot as well. I have an XP
home version.

I guess the Radeon is an ok card, but $100 is actually a decent amount
of money for a graphics card these days. If you add 10 or 20 bucks you
can actually get a ATI X600 ($110) or a NVidia 6600 ($124) which are
vastly superior. Check for instance:

100 is ok, if you can't afford something decent, or if you prefer mediocre.
:)

Personally, I always go for what I can afford... and then drop down a notch.
I find the very top end over priced, so I either wait until prices drop a
little of the next gen comes along and then get the former top of the
line... saves around 20-30%.

For example, was in the market last year for a new vid card... been looking
at the 9700 Pro.. waited for the 9800 Pro to come along and got my 9700 Pro
for 215 (down from around 300).

Already seen some prices drops on the X800 XT now that PE is out, and the
X850 XT PE is also just around the corner. (It's out, but won't really see
retail until new year). You can now get an X800 XT for under 300 now... when
they hit 250 I'll grab one. Not enough performance increase over the PE to
justify the extra 50-70.
