Hi, I was wondering which processor would be better for everyday tasks (Browsing, media, gaming.) The new 4.2 ghz clock on the 4170 and actual quad core looks much more appealing than the 3.1 ghz dual core with hyperthreading.

More about : 4170 2100

Hi mpheng,

The AMD FX-4170 has tempting specifications but benchmarks on Tom's Hardware show that it is not any faster than Intel Core i3 2100 in gaming. But there a lot of benchmarks available on the internet which show FX-4170 beating Core i3 2100 in games.

So, it should come down to personal preference and the amount of money you want to spend because both the processors will be fine for your needs. I think you should go with the one which is cheaper.

Also, if you go with AMD, then don't buy FX-4170 because it is just a pre-overclocked version of FX-4100 for much increase in price. You can overclock the FX-4100 yourself to 4.2GHz without any hassle and it will perform identical to FX-4170.

I recommend you to wait because Piledriver, AMD's Enhanced Bulldozer, will be available later this year and will bring about 15% performance improvement.

Also keep in mind that the FX 4170 is a 125W CPU, verses just 65W for the i3 :)
That 60W difference will show up as heat under full load, and also in ur electricity bill in the long run :D

As far as speed is concerned, the i3 will beat the FX in most tasks, including gaming. FX chips only shine on highly threaded loads like video conversion etc. I'd recommend u wait for PD, or just go with the i3 now....they plenty fast for all the tasks u've mentioned:)
