my pentium d runs in the 50s at idel and when max load it will stay at 88c for about ten min then will switch off as i have set a max temp shutdown temp of 90c my question is is this safe for my motherboard or will it catch fire etc

my board is

asus ecs p4m800prom version 2.0 altho cpuid says v1.0

If your computer is shutting down after reaching high temps it's overheating and reaching it's thermal limits. The computer is shutting down to prevent the CPU from frying. I would clean out the computer, clean out the fan/heatsink and re-apply thermal paste to the CPU.

i have done that twice and cleaned both the cpu and the heatsink .. i think the problem is that i am using the same heatsink that came with my celeron d 3.06 .

The Pentium D runs hotter than Celerons. Pentium D's have a Max TDP of 95 Watts the Celerons have a TDP of 65-86 Watt's TDP. The Celeron heatsink can't dissipate the extra heat of the the Pentium D. I would get a new aftermarket heatsink.

That's a bit overkill, he just needs the hyper TX3. $15 or $20.
