Rubbish performance

Specs:
i7 920 @ 4.2GHz
2x 6450s in crossfire 725/875 MHz OC
8GB DDR3 RAM @ 1600MHz

In Minecraft, I get around 190+ fps.
Why is my performance really bad?
How can I get more FPS with my current system?
If I get a 7850, how much more FPS will I get?

Thanks

  1. 190 frames per second aint enough?

  3. It's an i7, I'd expect more.

    MW3 wise, it gets 70+fps with it maxed-ish 1080p

    Any ideas?
  4. Well for one, a pair of 6450's arent exactly a GPU powerhouse combo. Those are both entry level cards and both together would equal about 1 midrange card. Your GPU will limit you more than your CPU will and that i7-920 is still a great processor.
  5. 2 6450s isnt actually a ton of graphics power, also 190 FPS is likely going to be hitting a CPU ceiling simply because processing for more than that is a total waste since you will only see two thirds of that on a 120Hz monitor and normally just one third.

What were you expecting to get for frame rates? Over 9000? Not going to happen, there are caps built into all games simply because its irrational and irresponsible to be calculating significantly more than could possibly be needed.

Minecraft is Java based, so it's not the best optimized thing in the world anyway.

Bottom line, 190 FPS is more than your monitor can even show you anyway... Don't worry about it. It seriously DOES NOT matter. It's not like this is a First Person Shooter that you may get an edge from such high FPS.
  7. Thanks for the reply.

If I purchased a 7850, what fps would I be looking at?
  8. I understand that. Seeing huge FPS is great :)

It's the thought of having good FPS.

That would be a pretty big jump in performance but it could be a waste of money. What resolution are you playing at and what games are you playing. If youre getting 70-190 fps, youre getting way more frame than your monitor will display anyway unless its a 120 Hz monitor. Unless youre playing Crysis, Metro, BF3 or a few others, youve got plenty of performance now.

 I understand that, but in Minecraft, it just doesn't matter.
  11. Lol, it isn't just Minecraft. For me it does, hence why I posted the thread.
  12. You need better video cards. Get the 7850. Youre CPU is fine.

Well, 70+ @ 1080p in MW3 is just fine too. Although, there at least, getting a 7850 would actually mean something.

If you were running with FPS below 30, then I think we could understand more, but you're not.
  14. Thanks for the info
  15. How much of an FPS increase do you think a 7850 would make?
  16. You'll have around 750-800 fps in Minecraft.

You'll also be able to fly to Mars.

Oh and as an added bonus your i7-920 @ 4ghz with the 7850 will probably be more capable in rational thinking than you.
  18. doron needs the best answer given to him. lol I don't know if it's just the booz but that made me laugh out of loud, literally.

I was only able to get about 500
  20. The only other thing that may affect your FPS in Minecraft is the Performance/Balanced/Power Saver setting. If you have it set to anything other than Performance, FPS will be artificially limited.

But I'm pretty sure the above posts have nailed the true issue.

  24. I had a laugh at that post too ... and I am sure the OP won't mind.

Seriously 190FPS is enough ... more than 60 is enough (though the dips are something to watch).

I can see someone asking for a build recommendation for Minecraft ... it it hasn't already come up.

Personally I can't see the sense in it but my 12YO is addicted to it ... and that Darth Punk stuff they call music ... yuck!!

    /cues some vintage Sabbath

Ok whatever. Stop going on about it.
I had a 2700k OC so am used to relatively high FPS.

A build recommendation? - Not funny.
  26. I have just re-installed windows.

    My FPS is now around 97 - 130 ?

    What has happened?

Your I7 is 2 generations behind Ivy bridge so don't expect mind numbing performance. Also what drivers are you using? 12.7 beta's?
