What is the difference between dell i5 2nd generation and dell i5 3rd generation laptop?

the 2nd generation chipset is based on 32nm architecture while the 3rd gen has a 22nm architecture...
the 3rd gen processor produces less heat, is more energy efficient and has better inbuilt graphics than than 2nd gen.

if u r going for a laptop or ultrabook, then go for the 3rd gen!

All you need to know is the CPU model number.

You can download CPU-Z to check it. 2nd generation Sandy Bridge i5 CPUs have model numbers starting with "2" such as the i5-2410m. 3rd gen Ivy Bridge CPU model numbers starts with "3" like the i5-3317U.
