Hi. You can replace the motherboard with one with a better GPU (unless you already have the top of the range model already). It shouldn't be undertaken by a complete novice but its not to tricky if you have any experience taking a laptop apart.

I'm in the process of upgrading my T42 motherboard.

A T42 upgrade won't get you anywhere, it's limited to a slow CPU by today's standards and the top video card for it is also slow. Use the money to find a more current laptop, new or used.

ThinkPads are good laptops, but as stated, the T42 is a bit dated.

I got a T40 with a Penitum M @ 1.5GHz from 2003 and it's pretty difficult to multi-task with it compared to modern laptops / PCs. It still works fine, but the battery only lasts 2.5 hours now.

I can play some old DX8 games on it.
