1500$ gaming rig feedbacks needed!

Hi all,

I already post a few months ago. After many hours of read on Internet, I changed my mind a few times about some pieces. My computer is starting to act weird so I don't want to wait anymore for Ivy and new video cards coming. I would like to have some comments/feedbacks on my target setup before I place the order.

Approximate Purchase Date: this week

Budget Range: 1500$

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Work (diaplay 3 monitors and good performance), games, movies and surfing

Parts Not Required: Monitors, Windows, HDD, mouse, keyboard, speakers

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: ncix.ca, newegg.ca, tigerdirect.ca, directcanada.com

Country: Canada

Parts Preferences: Intel CPU and Radeon video card

Overclocking: Maybe

SLI or Crossfire: Maybe

Monitor Resolution: I already have 3x 23" 1920x1080

Here is my target setup so far:
CPU Intel I5-2500k 210$
Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo 30$
SSD Crucial M4 128gb 150$
MB ASUS P8Z68-V PRO GEN3 195$
Case Corsair 600T Special White Edition 145$
PSU Corsair Pro AX850 170$
RAM Corsair CML8GX3M2A1600C9 2x4gb 50$
DVD ASUS DRW-24B1ST DVD Writer 20$
GPU Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 OC 475$
TOTAL 1445$

See any problem with my setup?
Any recommandation/item I should consider?

Thanks!!!

  1. That setup looks awesome! but do you need a hard drive?
  2. Get an XFX Core850W PSU Silver Rated. It is $140 on NCIX USA before a $20 rebate. Get a 500GB HDD from NCIX USA.

well i don't think a single 7950 will do fine with eyefinity gaming.if you are going to game on a single monitor then-

    Glad to hear that!

I already have a 500gb HDD ready to plug in and I also have a 1to external so I'm good.

    Thanks!

I considered the xfx power supplies but I heard many good and bad things about them. I choose to go with Corsair as they seems to be trustworthy for power supplies. The AX850 is full modular, gold and highly suggested on tech sites. It also fit in my budget. For the HDD, I Already have a 500go.

Do you think XFX is as good as Corsair?
    And I'm in Canada

    Thanks!

Really?!? Well yeah I plan to to play some fps on Eyefinity but I tough that one of those expansive beast was enough. I heard people using radeon 6950 on Eyefinity and it was just fine.

Then what do you suggest? Switch to a 7970? The budget do not allow me to buy 2 of those for xfire but I was thinking maybe to buy a second one when they price drop.

    Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestion. I don't know too much the Silverstone PSU but I will check the reviews.

Is it because the AX850 is not a good option or to save some bucks??

    Thanks
  9. AX is a bot overkill.XFX pro 850w is best bang for buck.you need at least 6950 xfire to run eyefinity with modern games.a single 7950 will not do well with modern titles like crysis 1&2,BF3,etc.

FYI, I'm not an "extreme and intense gamer". My main game will be Diablo 3 and some other RPG and shooter/car games comes second.

When you say "Will not do well", do you mean it will be mediocre or that I will have to play at medium settings instead of high?
Will a 7970 be better by a lot?
I'm not comfortable with buying 2x6950 right now. It means to pay more than for one big card and I'll be stuck with that. With one 7950 or 7970, I could at least upgrade later to xfire if I feel the need without having to buy 2 new cards.

Thanks for your inputs, I appreciate!
  11. A single 7950 will have issues running eyefinity. Especially with MMORPGS. You will definately need a 7970 minnimum to drive eyefinity at decent levels if you are only getting 1 card.
  12. ^you got your answer!both corsair and xfx units are made by seasonic that means xfx=corsair.
  13. If you're fine with med settings, get the 7950 and use eyefinity.
  14. Lol wow I was not expecting that! I really though that one new release 500$ video card would be enough for modern games with EyeFinity! I will check to change a few things and put a 7970 instead of a 7950.

That brings me another question! Is a 850W psu enough for 2x7970 with my current configuration and maybe some changes later (maybe little overclock, add more rams, BD writer, other HDD, etc.) ???
WIll it be safer to go with a 1000 immediatly, like corsair hx1050w 80plus silver at 200$ or xfx pro 1050w black edt 80plus gold at 190$ or Silverstone Strider gold 1000w 80plus gold at 180$??

I'm glad I asked the question before ordering!!

    Thanks again!!!
  15. 7970 cf runs fine with a quality 750w.850w would be plenty.
  16. After your comments, here is the new setup. (I already have one HDD)

    CPU Intel I5-2500k 210$
    Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo 30$
    SSD Crucial M4 128gb 150$
    MB ASUS P8Z68-V PRO GEN3 195$
Case Corsair 600T Special White Edition 145$
PSU XFX 850W PRO850W XXX Edition 80plus silver 120$ (after rebates)
    RAM Corsair CML8GX3M2A1600C9 2x4gb 50$
DVD ASUS DRW-24B1ST DVD Writer 20$
    GPU Sapphire Radeon HD 7970 925MHZ 3GB 560$
    TOTAL 1480$

Will add a second 7970 later.

    Looks better?
