Hello,

Will AM2 cpu work on an AM3 or 3 mother board- I would like to use ddr3 Mem. Is that a conflict cpu is HD8550WCJ3BGH Phenom X3 8550

Short Answer- No.

The CPU has the memory controller built into the die, and as It was made before DDR3 existed, the CPU was never made with a DDR3 memory controller, so it won't work when put into an AM3 socket. In fact AM3 has a different Pin pattern so it won't even fit. I'm afraid you're stuck with DDR2 unless you get a new AM3 or AM3+ cpu
