Hello and SURPRISE To all those of you that bought the Canon Digital Rebel
EOS 300 as its called, I paid $1 thousand dollars for it, was assured that
all my lens would work on it and got it home placed a Macro Sigma lens on
it, my super close up lens and guess what? BINGO, ERROR 99 meaning get that
off this camera.

Tried my 300 mm lens again SIGMA ,,, NO GOOD "Error 99"

What a shot in the dark for me all that money spent and then 2 or all my
Sigma lens do not work.

Why didn't Canon let us know about this before I spent some good cash.

If you are buying MAKE sure they tell you what lens WORK and what lens FAIL.

Thanks,
Tino

Gosh - yet another person finds out that Sigma lenses are not permanent and
blames it on Canon rather than on Sigma. Sigma is NOT Compatible with Canon
except by random chance. They claim they will rechip lenses that don't work
on newer Canon (and apparently Minoltas too) bodies but they can be very
creative in finding ways to get out of doing this.
Had you bought good lenses in the first place you would not be in this
situation now.
BTW Canon has NEVER guaranteed that any lens by any manufacturer other
than Canon will work on any Canon body, but there have only been a couple
lenses by manufacturers other than Sigma that have needed re-chipping.

These Sigma lenses are obviously old & meant to be used with EOS-film
cameras. Inquire with Sigma, most of them can be re-chipped and Sigma does
it free of charge. As Canon (& for that purpose all other major camera
manufacturers) keep their electronics to themselves by patenting &
refusing to license the independent lens makers, one cannot guarranty that
independent lenses will work with future models. You take that risk when
you buy cheaper third party lenses. But Sigma is good in the sense that
they would upgrade the chip free of charge. I have got two lenses
rechipped when I moved from EOS300 to 300D; both lenses are working fine.

My sigma 28-135 ASP Macro wouldn't work either. Perfect excuse to
upgrade to a decent lens ! Now got the canon 28-135 IS.

My Sigma 300mm lens works 100% fine. Not as good as the canon, but it works.

Just in case the message from the other replies doesn't get through,
I'll say it in words of one syllable for you. You buy a new car, get
some third-rate tires fitted, and then blame the car when a couple of
tires blow out?

Canon make first-rate lenses for their cameras that are *guaranted to
work on any Canon camera*. Canon do not have to verify lenses that some
independent company makes without the official technical data to base
the design on. Sigma are renowned for reverse-engineering the camera
interface, and their lenses often fail when used on a later camera than
they reverse-engineered. They run a re-chipping program to counter the
problems caused by their design approach, but I understand they do not
like re-chipping a lens more than once.

So, the problem is Sigma's, not Canon's. Get your lenses re-chipped, or
dump them and buy Canon.

Did you get the 18-55mm lens that is offered with the 300D? I bet that
doesn't throw an error 99. Go figure.

This is why I'm buying all Canon lenses. When I upgrade to a new body in the
future, I don't want the big surprise that none of my Sigma lenses work! You
can send the lens in and lose the use of it for a few weeks privided it is
not too old (yuck).

Sigma will re-chip these lenses for you so they work on the Canon.

>Why didn't Canon let us know about this before I spent some good cash.

Most 3rd party lens companies license the EF mount technology from
Canon and their lenses work fine but Sigma is too cheap to do this so
they try to reverse engineer the mount's signals and build lenses to
match, saving the licensing fees. But they miss a lot of stuff so have
to re-chip the lenses often when new cameras come out.

It's not Canon's fault, it's Sigma's.

Exactly!
Canon isn't in the business of guaranteeing that Sigma's lenses work
on Canon's cameras; that's Sigma's job.

Maybe. Maybe not. It's Sigma's call,not Canon's.
Sigma simply won't re-chip many older lenses.

Hellooooo?!
I don't own a 300D, but even I knew there would be a problem with older
Sigma lenses.

Research - what a shame people don't do it, and then get all inflamed when
nothing more than 5 minutes on the internet would have saved them all that
heartache.

But you're trolling really, aren't you, Augustino?

Just wait until the upgrade option is a $1500 Canon 16-35 from a $500
17-35...like mine was last week!

In fairness to Canon, they have no obligation to ensure compatability with
third party accessories. That's up to the manufacturer of the accessory,
not Canon.

That's not the case, apparently. Canon *will* licence the lens mount,
and reputable third-party manufacturers like Tamron and Tokina do so.
Thus, their lenses are generally compatible with new Canons. Only Sigma
is too cheap to pay licencing fees, reverse-engineers the mount instead,
and then has compatibility problems.

So the problem isn't buying 3rd-party lenses - it's buying Sigma.
