I'll be gaming on a 32" tv on 720p.
I was going to get a GTX 570, but is it overkill for my needs?

Yes, that is complete overkill. You should be completely fine with a 6850/6870.

really?

What games are you playing and how far are you sitting from your TV? It's probably overkill, but you really should look into getting a proper computer monitor. 32" at only 720p is going to give terrible aliasing.

at 720p at most id be looking at a HD6950 or a gtx560ti
but id your games really would look better on even a 23'' 1920x1080 monitor
32'' @ 720p will be very pixelated and for my liking pretty much unplayable

okay so if i invest in a new monitor, say 23" 1080p,
what would be a good gpu?

A 6850 will be able to max all settings at 720p...should be no challenge for it.

If you get a 1080p monitor, then at least a 6950 is in order. the gtx 570 is also a good choice.

Well for BF3 you can run it Ultra, Skyrim im pretty sure you can max it out. I have a GTX 560 TI. and i run all games at high and havnt had a issue. but with skyrim, like mostly everyone your only gonna get maybe 40-45 fps. because Skyrim is just wierd like that, Im pretty sure if you either got a GTX 560 ti or a GTX 570 (recommended) you will be set. Also if u notice the GTX 560 ti is cheaper. might i suggest a GTX 560 ti 448 core. its basically a 570 but performs like a 580 or so ive been told. Getting a 23" monitor is going to be better for you. i tried my TV. its just well wouldnt be as comfortbale in my case. but none the less with a new 1080p monitor and one of those cards. Youd be set.

cool, i think it's probably the best choice.

A 570 is WAY overkill for 720p.

I have a 5750 (about 3/4 as powerful as a 6850, less than $100 on eBay) and a 1080p monitor, and I can max skyrim except shadows. MW3 and WOW are easier, and SWTOR not much harder. Only BF3 would give you a problem. At 720p (which is roughly half the number of pixels), my card would be able to max every one of those games except perhaps BF3. I'd recommend a 5750, but of course I'll get my throat slit for saying that. A 6850 would also be a great choice, or a 6870 MAX.

If you really want to spend another couple hundred on a 1080p monitor, you'd love life with a 6850 or 6870, even if you couldn't max BF3. It would still look great. If you have cash to burn, a 6950 or 560 Ti (they're roughly equivalent) would be able to max it comfortably. A 570 would naturally be able to max all of them as well.

Do you regularly do any other massively parallel tasks? I render and I wish I had a better card for that specifically... Just something to consider...

Also remember that Skyrim is suuuper CPU-dependant... If you have an older processor you're going to be hurting big time. Maybe thats why my 5750 can max it... I also run an i5 2500k at 4.2ghz
