Hi. I'm getting a new PC with an Intel Core 2 Duo E6400. I'm going to use either DDR2 533mhz or 667mhz using dual channel because the FSB on the Core2s is 1066mhz. Anyway I read somewhere that if you use DDR2 667mhz you get performance problems, does anyone know why this is because I thought it would just make the memory slower to match the proccesor's FSB. I'm asking because I already have some DDR2 667mhz and was wondering if I should use it or buy the DDR2 533mhz to ensure there are no performance issues.

You should have not problems if set everything manual and decrease the ram speed as you overclock - and/or increase your voltage. Physically - feel the ram - if its cool - crank up the volts!

2.1v is sweet spot for ddr800

When have alot people who build their own and they really do not know what they are doing then u read misconceptions - in fact newegg is filled with people that say asus boards do not work with ocz. Well i used 6 different types of ocz with 5 different boards and they all work!!!

When make cheap ram they test it and sort and price it - sometimes they just stick different labels on it - its all marketing!

The fact is the 10 kinds of ocz ram, using as a example 533,667,800, are probably all the same stuff - they stick 2.1v on it - if it gets hot its 533 1.8v if its fast then they make 5-5-5-15 800 into 5-4-5-15 if its really fast then call 4-4-4-15 if its even faster then call it 4-4-3-15 all these are currently for sale on newegg as i type this.

Depending on your board, unless it nvidia with dial in, you may be forced if you over clock to choose nonstandard settings. This is where u need to adjust voltage and latencies.

3-3-3-8 533mzh ocz ram runs the same as 5-4-5-15 800mhz - if change the voltage from 1.8 to 2.1 and set the latencies. By the way if you can find the 3-3-3-8 it is cheaper faster!

Anyways lets say you overclocked and you can only choose 888 and 689 (i made these up i did to trouble to calculate actual true numbers) from 334 bus. if you choose 689 then u can lower the latencies if you choose 888 - it might even run - you must raise the latencies and/or raise the voltage.

Wow i hope that helps!!!

I have never heard of any performance problem associated with using DDR2-667 DRAM at the stock FSB speed of 266 (aka 1066).

I think what you are referring to is a benchmark (which unfortunately I can't point to :() which noted that if you ran the CPU at the stock FSB speed of 266MHz but ran the DDR2-667 at it's rated speed of 333MHz there was a slight performance hit.

If you run the CPU at the stock speed and maintain a 1:1 ratio then the motherboard will run the DDR2-667 memory at the (slower) 266MHz and you should not have any problems.

I had no problems with either:
DDR2 533
DDR2 667
DDR2 800

If anyone is willing to get me some DDR2 1000 or higher to test, feel free to PM me and I will send you my P.O. Box # and other pertinent information.

=)
