Does anyone know of an adaptor that will do this? I just scanned an
extensive article on flash attachments
http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/#faq10 and could only find a
comment on an optical device of that sort. Are there any that work on
RF?

Optical slave units are available from about £10 in UK. They slip on the
hotshoe of a flashgun and triggers it in response to light, usually from
another flashgun.Search some camera store catalogues for slave unit under
flash or flash accessories.

Shanghai Jinbei Photo makes a RF unit that can be had for less than
$30 for a receiver/transmitter pair if you shop around. It works
great with my old auto flashes, including a Vivitar 283.

Caution! Most of these optical slaves are designed to work with
film-based setups, and will not work with digital cameras.
Digital flashes fire twice in rapid succession. It's the second flash
that takes the picture, but most optical slaves will fire the slave
flash with the first flash they see.
There are only a few optical slave controllers out there that work
correctly with digital cameras.
