I dont want him lagged out while simultaneously downloading and viewing 10 streams of pr0n while he games. he is getting 32gb or 16gb. next time try reading and answering the question, instead of advocating something the poster is clearly not interested in.

I easily exceed 8gb ram all the time just with a bizillion firefox tabs open over several days on win7 x64. the memory leak has me so tempted to switch to chrome. i wish id have went with 24gb ram instead of 12gb... that being said, i am clueless about how much ram today's games use.

it is a serious question. if you don't have the knowledge to answer a question, move on. taking time to reply without adding to the discussion merely highlights that you have too much time on your hands and not enough knowledge. you got what, +1 point for answering a question? terrific, now earn it by posting something helpful. make this forum a better place by making a positive contribution, instead of being a forum cancer propagator. this is not 4channel.

next time try leaving out crap we are not interested in, and I'll actually answer you.

As for my knowledge I gurantee I know plenty more then you do. Asking how much memory / what kinda etc already shows you have no clue what your talking about.

First of all: 8gb's will be plenty. You do realize your internet speed will be more of the problem if doing multiple task's/videos online.

2nd: Your gonna pay out the ass for 8gb sticks.

3rd: You want to oc your memory for Sandy Bridge? You do realize SB will throttle your memory oc back down right? Same reason theres no point in buying 1833 etc.

Timings don't matter just get any normal one and get 1.5v for SB. Corsair G-skill - mushkin - kingston ...choose one since you know so much.

BTW your memory will actually be slower by going 32gigs or by filling all your slots even though 99.99% you won't ever use that much (research dual channel memory). I suggest 16gb dual channel if your still stubborn of needing 16 or 32.

Enjoy your internet surfing computer :) you prick.

Another point... The 8 Gb sticks have known issues... They don't always work right. They give anomalous errors etc... I'd stick with 4 x 4 Gb sticks. Get 1600 Mhz or greater 1.5v or lower RAM. Just get whatever quality brand is cheapest at the moment you purchase... G.Skill, Corsair, Patriot, Kingston...

Get whatever Mobo you want. I recommend a Z68 chipset from a quality manufacturer like Asus, Gigabyte, AsRock... What features do you want/need? Get whatever meets your desires...

My first thought on what to add to your system for a 14yo boy was a pr0n filter... Apparently you are not worried about that... maybe you should just provide him with links to your favorite websites...

haha, you got called out and got spanked on the internet and everyone knows it. by a female in a technology forum no less; you are going to need testosterone injections to recover...and the issue with the higher density ram (8gb sticks vs 4gb or lower) is heat, not speed. so i guess you dont know as much as you thought. go back to 4channel if you want to feel intellectually superior, cause it isnt working here.

Who the fck plays games and watches 10 streams of porn at the same time? I have 6GB of RAM, never gets about 4GB of usage even when gaming.

When using Firefox, you have to restart sometimes if you have a "bazillion" tabs open. I refuse to use Chrome so if the memory leak starts (which it doesn't for me) just X out of it then when you open back up go to the menu>history>restore previous session to open everything back up.

I think you are the 14 year old, but I've met my share of bad parents, just in case you are the parent, any chance I could have your name and city so I could report you to the police for contributing to the delinquency of a minor?

No, I'm not dispensing any advice on your build, assuming I believe you're the parent. If you want to be treated like an adult on these forums, ACT LIKE ONE.

Since you know about 4chan, what do you need our advice on for computer building? Ask them.

Thanks for the intelligent and on-topic response.
RAM: i knew about the 8gb sticks and high density memory, and was tossing around whether to get it for the headroom or play it safe with the build... but with a ssd as a main drive and win7 tweaks, it'd probably be safer for data integrity to keep the crashing to a minimum. i'll search newegg for a sale on a 16gb kit @ 1600mhz and 1.5v
MOBO: I'm pretty stuck on finding one in that shortlist that is better than the others. So I need some help here. We got him an unlocked 'K' processor, but plan to overclock at safe settings. not sure what requirements i should have -- half dozen or so USB for perpherials, a few sata 6gb/s for the drives, couple pci express x16 (v2 or v3 -- his i52500k wont support the v3, and i havent a clue if intel will produce future cpus for this socket, seems like only lga2011)
pr0n: i'm only being realistic looking toward his future. There is a pro Astaro firewall in the home, so I can put filters in there if i need to. But no matter how much technology I put into preventing pr0n surfing, the average teen is going to find a way around it. so I dont think i'd be productive throwing hurdles in there.

You're in violation of state and probably federal law by providing the means and opportunity knowing your child is going to seek out and access this material.

BTW, when you install that 2500k processor, make sure you press down hard. That socket can be real tricky, and if you don't get enough force behind it, it may not connect to all the lands properly. Twist it around and wiggle it a bit, and some of those pins on the front of the socket can be real stubborn, best bet is to pull them out with tweezers, they dont really do anything. :non:

Way to make yourself sound like a child. Please follow your own advice:

thanks for your lack of contribution to the thread. i see you are a regular here -- were all your responses equally unhelpful or is this some sort of outlet for an ocd disorder where you must post in every thread regardless of the topic? if you arent going to post something helpful, you are forum cancer.

...and the pr0n response was a joke because the original post asked for help recommending 16 or 32gb of ram, and the off topic response was '8gb is all you need.'
take the "how much ram do i really need?" debate elsewhere.

waaah, i wanna report you to the police cause i dont get the joke and im an attention whore. waaah. Egads, TH forums used to have exceptionally intelligent techies, not testicleless attention seeking cancer.

Either you are a troll or a bad parent or both. I have no interest in keeping you around to find out.
