Hi everyone
I use a 5 year old system(Desktop). Recently the cpu started shutting down automatically .When i try to restart it logs on but again the cpu gets off after a few minutes. I see the led on start button of CPU stops glowing and fans stop working, when i mean cpu shutting down. But i see the power to monitor and keyboard and mouse is still there.
Every time i turn on my system, I couldn't use it for more than 20 minutes. I couldn't turn it on immediately again :(  (It can't stay for more than 5 min). However i tried to run to some temperature tests through speedfan software.

I have already tried removing the ram chip(I have only one gb) and putting it in the other slot.still the problem persists.

These are typical symptoms of a heat and/or power problem. Make sure your system is as dust/hairball free as possible and verify that all fans are actually working. I would start with the power supply (PSU) as the likely culprit. They can,and do, wear out and fail (especially when under a heavy load).

Also, what model of Dell are you using? Some older Dells have capacitors that tend to fail over time, leading to these sorts of problems.

Please clarify. Good luck!

The CPU is overheating, those temps are very high. You should check to see if the fan on the CPU is still working if it is probably best to remove heatsink and fan clean all the dust out and reapply some thermal paste (after cleaning off all the old one) see if that helps.

Sorry for the delay.Site was reporting some error when i tried to post this.I didn't knew that it was posted successfully .I got the email notification today about these replies .
And regarding the problem, I figured out the problem the same night.
Cpu is getting overheated.First i thought to replace the heat sink or apply thermal paste .I tried fixing the heat sink tight and put the system on for the whole night monitoring the temps. It went well and is working fine. Probably the fan was not properly sitting on the cpu (transport problems I guess)
Thanks for your replies
