Understanding connections ports dns

Hello, I am totally thick when it comes to internet/router/ports etc..what does what. I have assigned my connections in my router but is there a tutorial to do things manually I rely on auto and luck mostly.

Your router would get it's DNS settings from the modem which gets its setting from the ISP. You can assign those manually as well I guess, but first you need to figure out what the settings would be from the ISP. What exactly are you trying to configure manually and why? usually your router's manual has a guide on how to configure all the setting manually.
