A newbie here. I want to upgrade to a digital camera with a good
zoom for nature shots. I like Kodak, but concerned over lack of IS(I prefer
not to carry around a tripod) Anyone familiar/recommend Panasonic FZseries,
or the new Canon 12x zoom Powershot S2 IS I understand these cost about
$500. Or any other recommendations?

Thanks

My wife has had a Panasonic FZ20 for a few months and used in to take
nature photos during a recent trip to the Antarctic. As a result, I
bought a Panasonic FZ5. We have both been delighted with the cameras -
especially the image stabilisation which is a great boon for long zoom
photography.

At the time, Canon only had a 3MP offering which ruled it out for us, but
the S2 with its swivel LCD finder should be an improvement over the S1,
although whether its lens and overall quality is a match for the Panasonic
remains to be proven. Personally, I don't like a silver, tinny-looking
camera.

This has been discussed the rec.photo.digital.zlr newsgroup, so you might
want to read the earlier posts there.

Cheers,
David

Clint,
Hello!
As a stock photographer, I have done lots of research and all signs
point to Canon being one of the ultimate besteeststs cameras, partic.
the Rebel and EOS series! And, for the record...Olympus stinks like a
rabid wolf in the jungle!

I have an FZ5 and like it a lot. Here is a hand-held shot taken at full
zoom: http://home.comcast.net/~charlessc [...] te1059.jpg

I've had a Panasonic FZ-3 for a few months and just got back from a cruise
to Alaska where I took about 300 pictures from people to nature. This camera
is really great. It is small, lightweight, and cost $280. The zoom is 12X,
lens is Leica and it has image stabilization.
