Hypothetically, if you were breadboarding and you had a motherboard, a cpu, a gpu and 2 sticks of ram and the psu all properly connected. If you took the heatsink off the cpu and switched everything on for a good few seconds and then switched it all off. If you then touch the CPU and it is hot, does that mean that it works with the motherboard?

The kinds of questions people ask never cease to surprise me.

In short, no. The heat only means that the cpu is getting power. Operating correctly is another matter.

+1 for abekle.

for instance if i remember right a am2 cpu would fit in a AM3 socket but would not work because the am3 board only supported DDR 3 but the cpu only supported ddr 2. so the system would power on but all you would get is beeping as the cpu was incompatible. i would search for the board on the manufacturers website for CPU compatibility lists.

you can only test with a meter. to see if your getting the correct output signal for the input you choose to use. sticking your hand on will do 1 of 2 things. burn your fingers or damage it if you arc it to ground. it certainly wont tell you its working correctly.

+1 abekl and rinval
