....I just finished replacing my old Xbox DVD drive with a new one I
bought on eBay. Luckily I had the right tools (read: Torx wrench) so
it made it much easier.

So far so good, as I'm hoping my modest $40 investment will eliminate
my DDE and allow me to keep all my game saves. Knock on wood.

Good on ya!

Game saves will definitely be unaltered if all you did was swap out the DVD
drive. They're all on the E: drive.
