How old is this unit?

You could try:

Replace your power leads,
Check if there is a burning smell coming from the monitor,
Replace VGA,DVI,Hdmi leads,

What's the model number of the screen and is it still under warranty

When your monitor is black, can you tell that your computer is still running? if it does, it should be an GPU problem, if it doesn't, it may be something more serious like an broken Motherboard or CPU.

If that were the case bloc97 the pc should be beeping, or refusing to boot.

The poster has not said this. And eventually it works....

It it would work eventually I doubt it would be the GPU/MoBo.

But he didn't give much info, so we need to suppose some problems or it won't get resolved...

computer works fine. I just typed this with a black screen. just timed it, every 6 seconds. Eventually it will stop going black and work just fine. If the computer sits with noone using it, starts all over again. It is now working fine. About 6 minutes.

Are you sure that it isn't some kind of windows screensaver or other screen-closing shenanigans?

Hi there, I'm facing a rather similar problem.

My monitor will go black after some usage.
It's not a fixed period of time but recently it seems to be turning black after 2 hours of usage.
If I'm playing music or a movie, the audio track will continue for a while before it becomes like a scratched CD, repeating that one single syllabus.
The monitor light will start flashing meaning it went on standby.

Further attempts to restart will show the windows screen running but it is very unlikely to reach the start screen before it repeats the same "black out" problem.

But after leaving the PC overnight, it will allow me to use it for about 2 hours again before it blacks out on me.
If I play games like Portal 2, it will black out in a matter of minutes.

I recently changed the PSU to a Seasonic S12 620W from a CM 500W. For a while it seemed like the problem went away, then it came back again.

I don't smell anything burning.

Is it the graphics card? I'm using a Gigabtye 9500GT 1GB DDR2

Any advise?

My computer specs are:

Processor : Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 @ 3166MHz
Mainboard : Gigabyte EP43-DS3L
Chipset : Intel P45/P43
Physical Memory : 2048MB (1 x 2048 DDR2-SDRAM )
Video Card : NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT
Hard Disk : Seagate ST3160021A (160GB)
Power Supply : Seasonic S12II Bronze 620W
Operating System : Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.01.2600 Service Pack 3 (32-bit)

Take out the gpu and run on-board and see if it still does the same thing,
