I'd like to see the number of the next image that will be recorded (e.g
0035 of the filename DSCN0035.jpg) on the display screen of my C8800.
Does anyone know of a way to make that happen, presumably in place of
the number indicating the remaining images on the card? I want to be
able to take notes that coordinate with the image ID. This seems like
a natural, but I cannot find anything in the manual.

No. You are going to have to use the image playback/review function to get
the # of the last shot.

Since you cannot do that, there's a different approach. Cameras
record the date & time the picture was taken. If the camera's clock
is correct then you can simply look at your watch to note the date and
time and record your notes based upon that.
