Cpu power supply?

ok i am trying to fix a hp pavilion a1640n it is all stock factory
last night i tryed to turn it on and it was un respnsive, none of the lights would turn on and none of the fans would power on i tested the power supply with a multimeter and everything checked out right but i couldnt find anything else to try so i stuck a spare power supply and it started up and ran perfect till i powered it down and tryed to turn it on again a couple hours latter any ideas?? thanks

Does the motherboard give a beep code? Have you added anything to your PC lately (HDDs, GPUs, new CPU, sound card, etc.)? What do you mean you checked it with a multimeter, were you able to check it while the system was running under load or did you just short the two pins to start it up separately?
