I have a Canon Powershot G6 that I bought a couple of months ago and
haven't got completely familiar with. I've installed the full software
on a computer at home, but I'm on the road and want to download to a
laptop, then remove the images from the camera. The laptop doesn't
have the Canon software installed. I think the software I was using was
ZoomBrowser.

I was hoping the the camera would just appear to the laptop (running
Windows 2000) as a disk drive, but that doesn't appear to be the case.
The only things I could find on the Canon site for the G6 are the Twain
drivers and updates.

Is there any way to get the full software, or any free software that
can download? Otherwise I'm stuck till I get home and can't take any
more pictures.

Thanks
Mike

Why not just install the cd software/twain driver onto
the laptop?

You could also buy a card reader, which will install a
driver into Win2000 that makes the memory card
appear in My Computer/Explorer as a removable
drive.

Huh? The guy has a G6. What's Adobe got to do with it?

Because I didn't have the software with me, and hadn't installed on the
laptop before I left.

Thanks

Your laptop probably has a slot that will accept a PCMCIA adapter
that you can pop the CF card into. I don't think that special
drivers beyond what is provided by MS with Windows are needed to be
able to read from (and write to) the card, and adapters are pretty
cheap and available almost everywhere.

Just download it from Canon's website. Does your laptop have
internet capability?

All you need is the Twain driver. Zoombrowser is a big download, some people
like it, other don't. With the Twain driver, you can aquire into any photo
software program (Irfanview is free). Not sure how win2000 handles, but in
xp camera shows up as an icon. However, windows explorer seems to only show
the image files, not the canon directory structure, so it's no quite the
same as a card reader, something which in practice is probably a 'don't
care' type of situation.

There's no need for a Twain driver or even Zoombrowser. In a
PCMCIA adapter the entire directory structure of the card is visible
using Windows Explorer or any other file browser. I've never had
any problem accessing any of the images that Canon cameras store on
their cards, and that also applies to the additional direcories and
index files created by Canon cameras. IrfanView is also able to
read images directly off the card.

I am using Mandriva LE2005 (a linux distro) and my experience using
several cameras is that connecting to the computer via usb is successful
in each case. The cameras are Sony dsc P1 and my wifes Sony ?, My grandson
little point and shoot, my HP 845 and my new Canon EOS 350 D. I use GTKam
to download and save with the Gimp to process if needed.

That's nice to know, but doesn't explain why the OP can't get
similar results with his G6. If he's in the neighborhood, perhaps
he can drop by and you'll make a CD copy of his images so he can
continue taking pictures? It that's not possible, it might be more
convenient and require less money to get a cheap PCMCIA adapter than
to purchase or try to download a Mandriva distro while he's on the
road. :)

June Linux Format DVD edition has it on a bootable disk.

And the mag./DVD probably costs as much as an inexpensive adapter
and would be much less convenient. But such concerns are as nothing
to true believers, proselytizers, and evangelists. I'll grant that
penguins are cuter and more honorable than unca Bill, though.

The s/w on Canon's website is an "updater". It won't install if you
don't have the original software instaleld already.

Don't think so. AFAIK, the Canon software you need is not on Canon's
website.

You could buy a $15 USB card reader. It will appear as a removeable
drive on your laptop.

You do realize that Canon's software is not needed? I have it
installed on my computer, but don't use it, as it is crude and
sluggish. I simply copy images directly from the card. I probably
should delete Zoombrowser and the rest of it as I haven't used it in
years.

and PS .. it is an absolute pain to get everything removed .. I had to
manually clean the registry to get rid of a lot of stuff ...
