Dell Dimension 5150 + 3.8Ghz=2.39Ghz?

Hello I installed 4 new gigs of ram in my Dimension 5150 last week and replaced my old 3 gig p4 with a Pentium 4 P4 670 3.8 Ghz SL8PY. Xp Pro is showing it to be a Pentium(R) 4 CPU3.80GHz. But only shows it to be running a 2.39 GHz. Any ideas?

  1. I am assuming you are looking at your speed with something like cpuz, then what you are seeing is speedstep: it idles at a lower speed just like any modern cpu. Run something like prime95 and you should see it go to full speed.

  5. It may also be that the CPU is running a bit too hot for your computer, which is causing it to lower it's own frequency to prevent burning out.

    Have you monitored your CPU temperatures?
  6. No way to monitor core temp. I could shoot it with an Ir thermometer. None of the core temp programs read the temp. I am using Artic Silver and the factory 3.0 Ghz heat sink It has a large fan blowing across it.. Processor speeds never went to 3.8 from the start.

    I'm not very sure how efficient this cooler is, but I remember long ago I've had overheating issues. I think this particular Dell was running a Pentium D @ 2.83Ghz..forgot the exact specification.

    On a side note, I'm kinda glad I kept this machine :lol: didn't think it would come in handy (even if it's just to show an example).
  8. Its alright that you cant get the cpu temp coz these P4's dont have the thermal sensors or atleast do not support most programs that give cpu temps.

    The fact that it completed the Load test means that it did not overheat as that would have shut down your system.

    The only worry is the cpu frequency....is it possible that your processor is drawing less voltage than it's supposed??

    Have you flashed the BIOS with the latest update?

    IS it possible that his BIOS is not allocating correct voltages to his cpu??
