Crashing system help

My system has started regularly crashing (freezing) for the last few months and I can't find out why. The system basically just completely freezes and I must reboot.
It is pretty random, it usually only happens every few days, but can happen several times a day.
The thing I have found which seems to be able to cause it in windows is watching video.

I have ruled out windows as the cause though as it happens outside of windows as well.

I have replaced the drives.
tried different 2 different gfx cards in different sockets.
run memtest on my RAM overnight with no errors reported
The motherboard is an ASUS P5QPro Turbo

nothing in this machine is more than 18 months old.

I don't have a spare PSU or CPU to test if these are the cause and have reached the point where I feel I have wasted enough time and money trying to find the cause now, so am on the verge of giving up and buying a new system from Chillblast.com

can anyone suggest any other tips to find the cause that wont involve me spending more money.

Sounds like a PSU problem to me. If you don't have access to one for testing then we won't know. I doubt it's the CPU (though I don't know what it is). You've eliminated the RAM as a problem. Anything could be the problem of course - but I wouldn't trash an 18 month old system for this problem.

+1 to Chaz, it does sound like the PSU or it could be overheating.
maybe even a drivers issue.

is there any way to test the PSU or CPU for faults without buying a new one, sorry if that seems like s dump question but i'm not an engineer so don't have testing equipment etc.
problem is I am spending so much money replacing all the components already when there was nothing wrong with them, which is just wasting money as I can't use them for anything now, i'm going to end up with a whole new system at this rate :-) thus why I thought I was better off buying a new branded system with RTB warranty.

I ordered a psu tester from amazon, only £10 :-)

I have put up with this problem for weeks already, a few more days wont hurt :-)

hmm,a ctually it seems it might not be hardware related.
I tried running windows in safe mode for a few days, no crashed.
Ran Ubuntu off USB for a few days, no crashes.
So seems like it is windows/driver related.

This makes it more odd, because I did a complete clean install of windows to try and resolve the issue, and all my drivers are up to date. I have also installed official/latest nvidia drivers in case of video issues seeing as that seems to cause crashes fairly often.

Then I assume 'I have ruled out windows as the cause though as it happens outside of windows as well" is no longer valid. Can you still cause it by watching video's?
April 2, 2012 12:24:54 PM

causing it by watching videos is very random, sometimes it will happen and sometimes not.
I do not have any 100% way to reproduce.
I leave my system on 24/7, and most times it will crash overnight when not in use, especially after the weekend. During this time it is of course not in use and under no kind of load.
I left my system running ubuntu since Friday, so far it has not crashed. I did not get it to crash when watching video on ubuntu so far.

The reason I had ruled out windows previously is because I left the system on the bios screen over the weekend, and come Monday morning and even that had crashed, but perhaps that was a fluke? it is very hard to say with it being so random.

PSU tester arrived today and says my PSU is fine.
system had crashed again of course, and today issue is systematically constant, at least this time I have seen an obvious cause, whenever I visited a webpage that had anything graphics/video related then the system crashed. e.g.
www.speedtest.net
the flash on this page seemed to crash the system every time.
I have used msconfig to disable everything except windows services and am running like this now to see if it reoccurs, although not sure how to determine which driver is the cause if that is the case.

Are all of your drivers up to date?

windows update is up to date, and nothing pending.

Let's go back to the basics. List your system for us - What CPU are you using? What RAM? What are your Bios settings?

I might have missed it but what version of windows are you running?
April 10, 2012 9:12:53 PM

I am running windows 7 64 bit.

April 19, 2012 9:32:11 AM

well I finally got the crashes to occur running safe mode and also Ubuntu live off USB as well, so I guess that rules out windows.
The syptoms really seem to point at memory issues, so I decided to remove some of my RAM despite the fact that memtest says it is all fine.
since doing so I have had no further crashes, so fingers crossed that is the cause of my problems.

Good to hear hope it stays that way
