I've been given $10,000 to spend on a 3D animation and rendering workstation and I would love some advice on what components to invest in.

I work in Maya for 3D with Maxwell Render for final output or After Effects for 2D and composting.

I'm not sure if it would make more sense to buy a new high end machine to build/render my projects or if I should continue to use my current workstation (which is perfectly functional but aging) and instead invest in a render-farm set up.

Any suggestions?

I'm not sure what a render farm setup would entail but I'm guessing it would be something like this. If you've got $10K to work with - I'd suggest building a setup based around the EVGA Classified SR-X and dual Xeons but that could run well over $10K. What is your current setup?
