I'm Going to Replace my mothers 7 year old Single Core CPU which is a Celeron R 2.4 GHz Problem is its so Dusty so it runs at 100% while playing her Farm ville and it lags up a bit.

So I want to buy her http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116399 a unlock CPU then push it up to 2.9Ghz to give her pc a bit of life Then give her my old GTX 220 if it would Fit inside the case.

I'm not 100% sure if she has a LGA 1155 or LGA 775 a new heatsink-cpu would do the trick Since I help my old friend out with his walmart pc before But he had a AMD so I new what to buy.

our do I need a Celeron?

Solution
OK, it's LGA 775 and here are the compatible CPU's according to this http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/t/19372573.aspx

Intel Celeron processor 430
Intel Celeron Processor 420 (1.6 GHz, 800 FSB)
Intel Pentium Dual-Core 2140 (1.6 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)
Intel Pentium Dual-Core 2160 (1.8 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)
Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5200(2.5 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 (1.8 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E4400 (2.0 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6320 (1.86 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 (2.13 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 (2.33 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 (2.66 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E7300 (2.66 GHz, 1066 MHz...
7 years old? Start over. Your mother's pc couldn't possibly have an 1155 cpu. I suggest you check craigslist for a used pc. On my local craigslist, there's a dell vostro complete system with LCD monitor and e6300 core2 duo cpu for only $50. Look for a similar deal and don't dream of overclocking a cpu for your mom. Stability is more important for her than overclocking; build your own if you want to game.

Solution
Could be a celeron 450; the e6600 might work if the board chipset is g31; use cpuz to identify the motherboard chipset, ram, etc. The motherboard chipset will determine what cpu might work; you won't get any help from dell. To upgrade the video card, you may need to change the power supply; the 6670 or 5450 chipset (video card) might work without a power supply change if it's 300 watts or more. You can still shop for a used cpu on craigslist if you live in the usa. I found some true bargains recently. http://austin.craigslist.org/sys/3093281541.html

I might just build her a Llano with DX11 graphics for like $300 bucks same price as the walmart computers. but better performance. I just don't like the CPU high wattage I made my mistake with my FX chip lol
