Of course, I no it backs up, but what exactly. For example. If my phone
were to crash and I needed to re-format it. Could I do it and then use the
backup to restore phone numbers, diary dates, alarms, ringtones etc that
were on the handset before it crashed. Many thanks.

Yes: it backs up /everything/ in the main phone memory.

Please tell me if it does weird things.

My understanding is that Backup from phone to memory card only backs up data
files, but Backup/Restore to/from PC Suite backs up not only data files but
settings also.

I'll write my conclusion first, since the length of the below might put
people off reading it: PC Suite's backup/restore functionality does, in my
experience, not work at all and can render your phone unable to start.

My personal experience is as follows.

I recently had reasons to test the backup/restore functionality of the PC
Suite. I've been trying out various programs and discovered that I was
unable to get into themes (screen just blinks and goes back to the menu). I
did a *#7073* and verified it worked again. After that I started figuring
out what program caused the problem (via several more resets).

For some reason I kept setting up the profiles etc to my liking between
each reset. This got boring real fast so I had the bright idea of using PC
Suite to backup the working phone *then* experiment to my heart's content.
So that I did and after I was finished, isolated the problem to fscaller, I
did a PC Suite restore. It promptly asked me if I wanted to overwrite
several files. I said "yes to all" cause I want a full restore, right?

Result was a phone that wouldn't even start. It hung after entering PIN and
eventually coughed up a "general system error" or some such. I had to
completely reformat it via the green * 3 hotkey combo to get the phone back
to a state I could use. I then tried another restore and selected *do not*
overwrite to all and the result there was it didn't restore any settings
since the .ini files with default settings of course already existed. Not
even the contact list got restored. If I then did a second restore of just
the contact list (and chose overwrite), I got the list but the voice
commands were listed as there, but empty. Nor was it possible to remove or
re-record since it couldn't find the file I wanted to change or delete,
presumably. Only recourse was to remove the entire user entry and re-enter
that user, then redo the voice command.

I just bought the phone yesterday, so what I've ended up with is doing all
the setup manually, then reimporting my contact list from my old phone
again. So no biggie in my case, but consider this a big fat warning when it
comes to PC Suite and restoring.. Running XP and communicating with the
phone via IR.

So.. How do other programs, like Oxygen's, handle this? Considering how
fragile the OS on the 6600 seems to be I'd really want a good, fully
functional, backup option, even though it really pisses me off having to
pay more money to get it.
