Ok, i need a bit of advice here.

My current CPU is an AMD II X3 720 (with 4th core unlocked), and i need a bit of advice on what CPU i should buy. I am considering buying the FX-6100 (yes i know i need a new motherboard), but i have heard that it is not the best for gaming. My budget for new CPU + Mobo is about £160 max and it would need to be good for gaming and be able to record well with fraps, it would also be good if it could emulate Gamecube/Wii/PS2 games good. I heard that the X4 980 is good, but i cant find it anywhere, the closest i could find is a X4 965 which actually looks pretty good considering i found it for only £80.

what motherboard do you have? the good thing about AMD is the backward compatibility of the CPUs

The 965 sounds good.

Overclocking/unlocking cores isn't my strong side but doesn't unlocking the 4th core on an X3 720 essentially make it an X4 925?

Have you tried overclocking your unlocked x3? Is it stable in higher speeds? Maybe you could even overclock it to the 965's freq?

Altough, it's admittedly probable that the 4th core wont be stable at those speeds.

the Passmark results for the X3 (with unlocked core) is 3235 where as the X4 965 scores a 4200, so it's considerably faster

Yeah, but the 720 is clocked at 2,8ghz, while the 965 is clocked 3,4 ghz.

What happens if you unlock the x3 and overclock it to 3,4 ghz?

My computer crashes whenever i OC it above 3.0GHz

Yeah, i looked on youtube and haven't found anyone who's OC'd the X3 above 3.0GHz, i think the 4th core must be really unstable

Ah, fair enough, then the 965 does seem like a good buy, especially if you are planning to overclock it. :)
