I would consider the GTX 560, which is around $160 after rebate on Newegg.

Quote from the HardOCP BF3 Performance Review:
"Throughout all of our testing it was apparent that the NVIDIA GPU based video cards were providing better performance and more enjoyable gameplay than the AMD GPU based video cards. There were no instances that we found where any AMD card provided better gameplay performance than it's NVIDIA counterpart. We also experienced an issue which we believe to be driver related with all AMD video cards. We experienced an extremely noticeable lag any time there was a large amount of debris flying around, explosions from missiles, grenades or vehicles, or buildings in the environment being destroyed. This was not present on any of the NV based GPUs."

That was true with the catalyst 11.11 drivers when bf3 was first launched which is what they used to test. I remember playing with those drivers and I was kinda pissed that the screen would blur a bit when you moved too fast or there was too much action. With 11.12 they fixed that and now bf3 runs as smooth as silk! Don't ignore AMD cards based on that review.

AMD and Nvidia both have different architecture but end up with similar results. Some games are optimized for AMD and some for Nvidia. Have a look at the hierarchy chart and it will show which cards are roughly equal to which cards. The 560 and 6870 are about equal the 560 ti beats them both but you will have to pay more for it. It really comes down to your own preference between the two now.

don't compare apples to oranges. they are different companies and they use different architectures

Would the hd6870 should have more advantages of optimization when running with amd processor instead of buying 560ti?

No, but they didn't say the 560 Ti. They said the 560. The 560 is roughly a little slower on average than a 6870, but it also has a lot more overclocking potential. The 560 Ti is much faster than a 6870, it is pretty equal to the 6950.

Wait for the 7870/7850 cards...they might be in your price range. Or at the very least the 6950 1gb will drop in price and you can buy that within your price range.

Also just to add, based on the card prices (in australia at least) it should be:
6950 with 560ti (both cost around $250-$270)
6970 with 570 (both cost around $350-$400)
gtx 580 (this costs $520-$600)

So if you were adamant about buying the NV 5xx series or AMD 6xxx series, you should also consider the prices.

I know all this is very confusing. I would just stay with what you first wanted and then do all the reserch you want on your rig. Then you can save and or buy one piece at a time if you want to build a nice rig.

Your budget is all you can afford right now. That 6870 is not a bad little card. Everybody including me would like to see you get into a bigger and badder card. But the truth is your budget. Go with that card now and do what I suggested. That way you have a PC now and as time goes on either save or buy as you go. I do wish you the best.

the 6870 performs better than the 560 in bf3, the 560 performs less than the 470 and more than the 460.

With a single 6970, the i5 2500k, and 8GB of DDR3, I was getting about 35fps-50fps totally maxed out (1080p) in BF3.

With my current specs, I get between 60fps-100fps totally maxed out.

I would say, if you want to play the game at max, I wouldn't go with less than a single 580, that is, unless you are content with a sub-60 frame rate.

If you are content with playing the game, perhaps not maxed, but at mid to high visual settings with AA off and 720p, than a 6770 and up will suffice.

Personally, I wouldn't purchase the game unless I had a good quad-core CPU with 4GB of DDR3 and a 6950 1GB.

BF3 is very demanding, indeed.
