So anyone know the difference between the various Limited editions of
games and the regular editions?

I missed out on the Limited Splinter Cell Chaos Theory on the Xbox,
bought the regular edition instead, I've seen the limited versions for
the PS2 and Gamecube but the back of the box didn't really say what was
so limited about them. A cool (damned cool) metal case? What else?

The limited edition Halo 2 came with an extra DVD with some behind the
scenes stuff (mostly about how the developers were having picnics and
playing grab ass when they could have been scripting a decent ending to
the game).

It did have the funniest 5.1 sound test I've ever seen in my life. It
was worth the extra $5 just for that.

Tonight I grabbed the limited Jade Empire (alas, no cool metal case on
this one) which features a second disc with:

"Monk Zeng Content - Unlock the Monk Zeng character and his Monk Spade
fighting style -- a Limited Edition exclusive"

That sounds like it could be cool (and something that could have been
Xbox Live content, but the game is not Live capable.)

It also has the making of video from G4 TV and playable demos of
MechAssault 2, Forza and a plug for the Prima strategy guide.

I am curious about the Splinter Cell bonus though.

how often do you watch the bonus disks that came with Finding Nemo or
Ice Age? it's all marketing, as i'm sure you know. myself, if i'm
buying a game like Halo 2 and they happen to have the LE version for
the same price - great, i'll buy it. otherwise, for me, it's just a
waste of $5. of course, i totally understand why some folks are into it.

Gotcha. It doesn't sound like I missed too much. Thanks!

(I thought it was going to be like Halo 2 and Mortal Kombat, both of
which are STILL easily available. Oops. My bad... Doom 3 is next...)

Besides the game disc it came with a regular DVD video disc with art
gallery, making of, development diaries, etc. Usual stuff. But yeah,
the Splinter Cell LE truly was indeed limited unlike Halo2, Mech
Assault 2, Doom 3, and Jade Empire where the "limited edition" is
actually made in quite large abundance.

After reading about what some of the Japanese SE/LE releases of games come
with, I fail to understand why anyone would bother paying $10-20 more for
an American "SE" release... Sure, the Japanese SE releases are a lot more
expensive, but their extras are a lot nicer - and if you're truly a fan of
the game, wouldn't you rather have something worthwhile - like a high
quality hardcover "the making of" type book, a soundtrack CD, or even
small figure/toy? About the only company that's come close to that was
Working Design's releases of the Lunar games and their Arc The Lad
collection. You got things like audio CDs, cloth maps, even a necklace
(a reproduction of the one worn by one of your characters.)

As for movies, yeah, most of the bonus stuff crammed in is pretty
pointless. I'm more concerned about the quality of the movie. Although I
do like to listen to the commentator track for some movies. Unfortunatly,
most commentator tracks aren't worth the disc space they use.

Doom3 for xbox was $10.00 more for the special edition.
No way I was going to pay that. I traded in NFSU2 and Burnout 3, then
paid my 10bux for Doom3.

I'll never go back to Doom, or Ultimate Doom, so the SE wasn't calling
my name out.

I have a LE Halo2. It's signed by some of my friends who worked on the
game. That's the only reason I bought the LE, was to get the sigs on it.

Ultimate Doom and Doom 2 were the only reasons I bought the game at all.

Had it not been for the SE in this case, I wouldn't have even bought
Doom 3. I might have rented it, but certainly wouldn't have made a
purchase.

In all honesty, Doom and Doom 2 have gotten more Xbox playtime than Doom 3.

See, that's what I'm thinking as well. It's been a long time and I'm
curious to see how well they translate to a console.

It could be too that the original speed was tied to the clock cycle of
the machine. I've seen this on a lot of old games, when run on modern
hardware the speed is through the roof.

It could be that my memory doesn't serve me as well as it could, but the
marine seems to move a whole lot faster on the xbox version than he ever
did on the PC.

Or it could be that it's just been so long since I played the original
Doom and most modern FPS games don't let you move that fast.

At any rate, the game looks and sounds great. The control scheme is a
bit awkward at first, but its easy to get used to.

And split screen multiplayer rocks. Smooth framerate, no loss of
detail, the works.

Of course we're talking about a ten year old game here, designed to run
on a PC system that is approximately 100 times less powerful than
today's top systems.

I'm glad to see that they took the time to do it right, though, by
giving multiplayer rather than just slapping it on as a single player extra.

I don't think that's it, because it's just the marine moving faster -
the enemies, door animations, etc. are all exactly how I remember them.

Similar to you taking a girl on a date. Not that it could ever happen.

Hope you enjoy your regular edition of Jade Empire missing one of
the characters.
