With gpu in psu, no power

Hi gues!

Was wondering if you could help me out, I recently had a mass of trouble with my ATI HD 5770.

I got in from work and went to run spotify to chill before bed and my pc fully died.
after a bit of playing about in my case, i took the GPU out and tested to see if it'd boot.

It did, but obviously unusable.

I tried gpu in mobo without the power from psu in and the fans span up too.

I put in my geforce 8800gts and its working, so im thinking it's a dud ATI but after it spinning up without the power in it's got me wondering if its the psu.

Breakdown of symptoms

psu in and gpu in mobo : spin up for a second then off
psu out and gpu in mobo: spin up, unusable.

Any help would be great

really stumped on this!

Any 8800GTS will consume more power than your 5770.
  2. What PSU is it?

    It's a decent psu, doesn't really matter.
Said it before , any 8800GTS ( you didn't specify which, but that doesn't matter either ) will draw more power than a 5770.
It will do it under all conditions, startup, idle, watching a movie, playing a game , running a power virus , lalalalala , if your system can run with an 8800GTS, the psu isn't causing your problem.
