Hello,

new and not sure if this will work or not but thought i would ask

I want to setup a wifi AP that me and my neighbor can use for storage and maybe host a webpage/forum where stuff can be posted.

I don't want internet access just a local network that works on wifi and not sure how to go about it.

I figure I would need a box running linux and setup a AP through it.

which i can do in windows 7 but need advice on the server part

I guess i need to run a server on the linux box

or would a VPN work better?

I also want to be able to monitor the conections

wireless distrubution systems are something I read about to and have no clue

Just a thought on having a local wifi network that neighbor friends and family can log into post stuff and share files

thought wifi would be best since it's well used, even most cell phones can do it.

Thanks for any advice you can give me

You have a lot of questions, and I will address as many as I can.

Setting up an AP is trivial, but I would use a wireless router for simplicity.

You don't need a VPN, at least if I understand your needs correctly.

For file sharing you can use Windows or Linux.

For webpages/forums you can use either Windows or Linux, but you need the Apache web server.
