Hello all im in need of some advice, Since 2008 3 months after i built my first comptuer my 8800GT starting screweing up (i would get green dots all over my screen) but since i didn't register for the warranty i had to stick with it for years.
Now it seems to have finally died, whats the best way to ensure it is dead so i dont buy a new card for nothing?
At the moment my monitor is restricted to the lowest screen resolution and its grey with lines running accorss the screen ( http://i260.photobucket.com/albums [...] 142236.jpg )

This is the system that i am currently using ( http://i260.photobucket.com/albums [...] 010001.jpg )
P5E-V HDMI
Core 2 Quad Q6600
G8800GT 512MB EVGA
Corsair HX-620

The graphics cards that i have been looking at are the
ASUS 1GB GTX560 PCI-E VGA Card $194 Or
ASUS 1GB 6870 PCI-E VGA Card $218
Can someone make a recommendation about which of these cards will work best with my existing system?
Truth be told im leaning towards the 6870 because i have only ever used nvidia cards and i have always had problems, my bro has an AMD on his and he has had no problems with it at all.
So what do you all recommend i should do?
Edit: Oh an i bought battlfield 3 the day it came out and i am yet to play it :-/

I'd say got 6870 and overclock the quad core. should game pretty well

Reply to ebola28

that is mimimum e quirement fo win 7
Graphics card
DirectX 11 compatible with 1024 MB RAM (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 or ATI Radeon 6950) all the specs nede to play the game http://store.origin.com/store/ea/h [...] p=eaint569

Reply to scout_03

no, that is the recommended specs. NOT minimum. you will play BF3 well, just not on ultra...

Reply to ebola28

Tbh i dont want an ultra machine i just want something that works without problems for once, i gave Nvidia a chance they disappointed me twice, now i think its time to try AMD maybe they will work out better for me

Reply to beyondthefist

id say get a good cooler for your CPU so you can overclock and pick up the 6870. should last you for awhile. you will have to drop a few settings, but not too many for BF3, but still look great

are you using win 7

Yes at the moment im using windows 7 but i plan on reformatting and putting a fresh windows 7 on it when i get the graphics card as the computer is 4 years old.

then check the link before buying the graphic card

That last bit about not having played BF3 yet was just something i added because i was annoyed that my graphics card was so screwed, im more interested in the compatability of my current system with those two or possibly other cards that will work well with what i have.

Reply to beyondthefist

your PSU can handle either card, and your mobo supports pci-e x16, so you are fine compatibility wise

Reply to ebola28

So that sorts out the compatability issue.
Can someone tell me what the best way of telling whether the problem is acctually the graphics card or something else?
Im almost 100% its the graphics card but i just want to be sure before i purchase a new card.

disconnect the pci-e card and use the internal one

I disconnected it, turned on my computer and a single continous beep started coming from inside the tower, the noise was coming from what im assuming is the system speaker, it was so loud it freaked me out. haha
What does the sound mean? Was is it supposed to happen?

What did you do after you heard the loud freaking beep? Did you turn off your PC right away or did the beep went away & the PC evebtually booted to Windows?

I turned it off right away, then i tried turning it on again and left it for about 5 secs and it still did it.
When i plugged the PCI-e card back in it stopped.

Reply to beyondthefist

Okay, please uninstall your graphics driver first before you remove the PCIe card again...

Reply to randomkid

The sound only happens when i unplug the PCI-e, when the PCI-e cable is plugged in the sound doesnt happen.

Have you tried to uninstall your graphics driver (for the PCIe graphics card ) first before you remove the PCIe card?

Reply to randomkid

Yes i have tried that still didn't work.

Reply to beyondthefist

Okay. Just keep the 8800GT in there. Do you have a 2nd monitor to connect to the motherboard HDMI port? If yes, can you activate both monitors simultaneously with 1 being connected to the 8800GT & the other monitor connected to the motherboard HDMI port?

Reply to randomkid

^Tried that, it didnt work through the motherboards hdmi using a hdmi (from monitor) to mother board hdmi with the graphics card driver uninstalled and the monitor cable taken off, also tried with hdmi on mother board and DVI to monitor still didnt work (im using a second monitor for this test)
I really want to get my comp fixed but i want to be sure that the graphics card is the problem. Whats the easiest/best way to check the status of my graphics card?

Ok i just tried using a VGA from motherboard to second monitor and it said VGA no signal. Is it possible that the motherboard is the problem?
I think it could possibly be a combination of the two.

I just tried using the mobo VGA using a scecond monitor i got the VGA no signal error.
Where in the BIOS do i check for that?

Reply to beyondthefist

under the graphic section did you got your motherboard manual the show you where to go

Reply to scout_03

user manual page 2.23 and 2.24 then 4.23 for bios settings and you could not use the internal with a pci-e card in http://usa.asus.com/Motherboards/I [...] /#download

Reply to scout_03

My problem is very similar to this guy and he has the same Graphics card as me so i think its pretty safe to assume that my gpU is the problem.

i think its best i just take it and pay for someone else to check it out for me.

Reply to beyondthefist

or if there is a friend that could try your card or have one spare to try in this mobo

Reply to scout_03

Not worth it theres a guy around my place he charges a $20 service fee, ill just get him to do a diagnostic on it and ill fix it.

Reply to beyondthefist

Well i tried using a new graphics card i had lying around (8600 GTS) i won it in a comp never used it and it started working normally again. I still get green dots everywhere but overall its working.
Im just wondering should i go for the 6870 ASUS or go upto the 6950 HIS?
Are HIS any good or should i just go for the lower card yet better manufacturer?

Reply to beyondthefist

if you still get green dot on the monitor would check with another one monitor could be defective

Reply to scout_03

My computer doesnt seem to work with my brothers monitor it says VGA no signal. Whenever i get the green dots i press switch user and log back in and it usually goes away but comes back soon after.

Reply to scout_03

My monitor is a ASus vw222u and im using a VGA to DVI adaptor to connect to my computer from the monitor

Reply to beyondthefist

Is it even possible that my monitor is the problem?

Reply to beyondthefist

if you connect vga to vga and use the menu button yuo will be able to get input select as seen on page 3.3 in manual http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/L [...] 02-222.pdf for the monitor settings

Reply to scout_03

Ok i just tried from my tower to my brothers monitor and i got no signal.
From my monitor to my brothers tower i could see on my monitor and i didnt see any green dots so i think my monitor is ok.
I think my plan now is to get A 6870 Asus or 6950 HIS.
Im also going to reformat my computer and put windows 7 64 bit.

Reply to beyondthefist

good and with the win 7 64 you will be happy but make shure that everything you got work with

Reply to scout_03

I have checked windows 7 64 bit is compatible and ill ask the salesperson if the cards work with my motherboard.

Reply to beyondthefist

good then you will be ready to compute and play games again

Reply to scout_03

Change of plan i took it to the guy around my place and im having him put in a HD 6870 Sapphire $235 and also putting a fresh copy of windows 7 premium $60 bringing my total to $295 installation included.
If i had purchased the parts including microsoft 7 it would have cost me $218 for the graphics card and $98 for windows 7 cd, so $316 and i have to do all the work.
It works out cheaper and better for me, if something goes wrong when i get it back ill just take it to him to get it fixed.
