My Parents got me a new PC and I want ot be able to play some games so I am wondering about videocards. This PC is good and all but its video card and CPU and PSU aren't very good I mean the PSU is for the new video card buut the CPU and GPU are what I want to upgrade. This was for christmas but I want a bit more power to play Skyrim. I have tested out specs my Mobo supports Nvidia and AMD 2-way SLI 4 ram slots Intel supported yep. K what do you guys recommend for Skyrim.

More about : parents put video card

your on 775 platform your limited to old tech in terms of CPU pending what your mobo you could upgrade to a quad core. isnt the 8600 3.3ghz?

However, they are not cheap as they are increasingly becoming difficult to find.

edit. if the e8600 is 3.3 ghz, my advice would be to upgrade your gpu to a gtx 560 or a hd 6870 these go for roughly 170-200.00 pending your model and where you buy them from.

you could go for a gtx 560 ti but you cpu may bottleneck that card on certain games.

as typing this we still need more info:

What is your monitor resolution?
what games do you want to play and at what resolution?

the core 2 duo E8600 is a LGA 775 chipset, so it will not support core i7's or anything like that. those are a different chipset, LGA 1156/1155.

are you just looking for a new graphics card? and how much ram do you have? at that resolution, you won't need to come close to your budget

Oh. My dad said it was. Whoops Sorry. It has 16GBs of ram DDR3. I want to upgade the CPU and maybe PSU but definitely graphics card.

i would say get a good CPU cooler and a nice GPU. not worth upgrading processor until you upgrade mobo.

PSU is fine, so is CPU at this point.

overclock your cpu and get a nice gpu. save some of the money and keep saving for the next upgrade, which will be 1920x1080 monitor. but for now, just GPU and a good cooler

e8600 is 3.3ghz and is a very high tiered old duo core cpu. You will not be able to upgrade to a better dual core cpu on the 775 platform. the e8600 go for 200.00 plus new. I can't recommend spending that much on old tech.

another option would be to buy a q9400 which is a lower clocked quad core these go for 170.00 plus. Still it is old tech.

Sorry to say but you may have been better off simply buying all new components and building your own.

May I ask how much you have spent on this rig thus far?

well if you have stability issues I would recommend you first try to determine what is causing those issue. My guess would be faulty ram but could be a myriad of things. Download and run memtest to see if it is your ram.

at that resolution a hd 6870 or a gtx 560 should max every game out those cards are both under 200.00.

It looks as if it could be my ram as it turns out its DDR2 ram so I will upgrade that and its a few years old.

just because it is ddr2 does not mean it is faulty. My laptop that I am currently typing on is running ddr2. Old does not mean broken.

EDIT.

you are going to have to do some diagonostics on your pc.

download

HWmonitor: monitors temperatures of your componets
Prime95: stresses cpu and test for stability
memtest: test memory.

Yes, also download HWmonitor to check your temps, aswell as Prime95, what we want you to do is run prime 95 with HWmonitor open for atleast 15 minutes, then tell us the temps of your cpu (should be labeled CPUtin or Core # (followed by the core number)

aw snappy beat me to it

(also im using some DDR2 (4g) in my newish build, there is no performance increase between DDR2 and DDR3 imo

Ok so you seem to be quite new to pcs in general that is ok. However, I take no responasability for damage done to pc while running these diagnostics.

download hwmonitor first (i recommend this) and run it on idle to determine your stock temps and such (I would do this out of curiostity but is not necessary) after this step do this:

Make sure the pc is off and is unplugged from the PSU.

You are going to want to clean out the case with a compressed can of air.

Make sure your heat sink is clean (more compressed air).

then run hwmonitor after the cleaning (check idle temps)

then run prime95 with hwmonitor, make sure cpu temps do not exceed 90c (they can but it is not good for the cpu) if they do close prime 95 you have to file exit prime95 simply clicking the x in the top corner will only minimize (at least it does for me).

Keep in mind that all of these test will take some time, so have fun.

O.o we wanted the temperatures not activity percentages :)

Check temps first, cleaning is an issue but it MIGHT not be immediate :)

your cpu is probably throttling back due high temps. Is your system only unstable during gaming?

seems like your case is in dire need of cleaning

Your heat sink probably needs to also be cleaned and reseated.

If your dad knows pc hw have him help. but ask nicely.

unstable meaning what exactly?

like random system shut down?
high cpu utilization on idle?

I assume you have updated drivers, and an anti virus correct?

give us the temps from hw monitor.

55 celcius is hot for browsing but should not decrease performance.

when you say unstable it is too vague, I assumed temps were the issue and you fps or games would get laggy. Yet we need you to define what unstable is as we can't physically see it. So we need examples.

He said 70 degrees while browsing, I am assuming he means 70c which is 158 degrees Fahrenheit

thats a bit of an extreme temp imo, what case do you have and where is it placed? does it have intake fans and are the fans pushing air out blocked by anything, etc, etc, etc

This ^... but I might take a 6850 Hawk edition for the price and OC it to 6870 speeds... I bought the cheapest 6870 I could find (XFX single fan model).. sounded worse then my vacuum, I was ridiculed out of my family, etc (not really but it was EXTREMELY LOUD, loud enough for me to eat the 10 dollar shipping + 20% restocking fee then shell out another 20 bucks to get a hawk 6870 :)  )

+1 to amuffin.

I'm sorry dude I'm tired, but I was eluding earlier on to amuffins suggestion of simply replacing what you have.

Your system needs some diagnostics. if you have someone you know that will do it for free do that. It could be a myriad of problems.

my recommendations are:

clean it out with a simple compressed can of air.
make sure your drivers are up to date
make sure you have an anti virus program
run memtest to determine ram issues

the problem is it could be anything, was it unstable as soon as you got it? If so i would try to return it to the family friend.

If your parents spent 200.00 on the pc and you were willing to plunk down 500.00 in upgrades you could have built a pretty good brand new gaming pc that destroys the one you currently have.

you won't even need the i5 2500k to destroy your current rig a simple i3 dual core would easily be better. (i'm not not recommending the i5)
