Hook up dms 59 splitter from card to computer

We have a Dell Optiplex 160, 2002 XP professional, SP3, 2 GB RAM,Pentium 4CPU 2.40 GHz. Dell recommended VisionTek ATI Radeon 3450 video card (900292) as compatable. Our question has to do with connecting the included DM-59 splitter. It connects to the card through the case. One arm of the Y is connected to the monitor, but what does the other arm connect to? The splitter has a 1 & a 2 on the arms. Are those important? There weren't any relevant instructions included with the purchase. Thanks. ,
