Hello everyone! I am here with a new project. I haven't seen anything like this on Tom's in a while, so I figured that I would post. I am currently embarking on a case making project, that is being delayed, so I have decided to take on a slightly smaller project for the time being, just for something fun to do. I thought that it would look better, if I removed the cheesy EVGA GeForce GTX 570 sticker from my GPU. So, I did. Well, as it turns out, EVGA are the masters at making sticker adhesive. I peeled the sticker off, thinking that it would be no big deal, only to find that once the sticker is off, there is some residue left over. No big deal, I'll just peel it off with my thumb nail and continue on with my business. Ohhhhh noooo. It couldn't be that easy, of course not. In summary, it seems as if EVGA does not like people taking their stickers off of their products, so they just make it really difficult. Well now that I have started, I can not turn back, so I am trying to get all of the adhesive off, but it just isn't coming off. Tomorrow I am going to stop by the store and pick up some stuff to get it all off. Anyways, back to the point, this is going to be a small running work log of this initially small project. I will be continuing to try to get all of the adhesive off, and possibly later on painting the card, which involves sanding, priming, the whole ordeal, so I thought it might be neat to keep everyone updated on here. Here are some pictures of it so far.
Already wasn't off to a great start

Tried WD40, didn't work. However, I used nail polish remover and it took it off, though it took the better part of an hour, it still came off. It isn't too pretty, is quite shiny, but a bit more scratched than I had hoped, though in the case, you can't even tell. And Jay, sorry to disappoint, but no. The mod isn't just taking the sticker off, though I appreciate the sarcasm. Actually, I am going to paint part of the GPU soon. There is a bit of a groove around the shiny part, and everything from there out is going to be orange, and maybe part of the blower. It is a work in progress, so bear with me as I work out the details and such. And it would be nice if Jay and any others that wish to participate would provide help/tips/compliments/criticism, rather than upfront sarcasm. Don't get me wrong, I love sarcasm, but there is a time and a place for everything
I will be updating with pictures shortly

I managed to get the stuff off actually using nail polish remover. Thanks for the tip Moto and I appreciate the suggestions Jay. Anyways, here are some updated photos.
The part that is clean is shiny. At least there's that.

Almost there. Just a bit more.....

Its gone! (mostly)

Done.

Back in it's temporary home.

And here's another small project that I decided I would try out.

I need to get some better paint that is made for that kind of plastic though if I'm going to do all of them. Also, it takes a while to tape, so it would be good to get some perfectly black paint (this stuff has a bronze kind of tint in the right light) so I would only have to tape the ends so I would not get paint on the connectors and metal pieces themselves. Let me know what you think everyone.

You could heatshrink each wire individually into the plug, then have the usual one shrink over them all like where it normally is, pita job hehe but would look very tidy,
glad to see the card got clean, hard work huh?
but it pays off when you have that mirror sheen reflecting the lower mobo man, good job
I like these little mods, they say the devils in the details and you really are going for the smallest of details to focus upon, keep it up, keep logging your work and maybe you can find you some sponsors at a point in the future, good work is its own reward but freebies are a nice addition hehe

I appreciate the support. And yeah, I'm a details kind of person. I'm slowly working my way towards something. Not quite sure what, but I'm getting to where I want it to be haha. I like the heatshrink idea but that's when money comes into play here. I don't have a summer job right now because I still haven't gotten my license (just turned 16, yes I know I'm young haha) I have only about $140 right now, and that is going towards the phantom quite soon, which will bring me one step closer to getting it where I want it to be. This stuff seems kind of neat. Comes in the orange that is similar to that on the phantom that I am getting. (see picture)

It's called Techflex. Seems pretty nice and I wouldn't need a whole lot. I would just be covering the visible cables and stuff. or I could get black and do just the ends where there are the individual wires exposed.

They have a decent amount of stuff to choose from. http://www.heatshrink.com/prod-techflex.htm

Like the ideas, as for the painting, don't worry to much about the type of paint used just make sure you use plastic primer beneath the surface primer.
If you can use 2 pack paints (the ones where you have to mix in hardener), they need to be sprayed from a gun though.
If you have any questions about painting let me know as I work in car body repair.
Good luck

rustoleum make some nice paints that are primer and paint rolled into one. Might wanna look into that.
about sleeving, take my advice - if you're a details guy, the lil bit of sleeving sticking out like a pimple will hurt your reputation
honestly speaking, your cable painting/sleeving idea was in my books initially - then i chucked it out in favor of doing it right.
great job though

What do you mean by little bit of sleeving sticking out? I'm confused....

ahem, by doing it right, I'd have sleeved all the wires from the start to finish
- I'm a details kinda guy who seems to find flaws after taking macro pics of the case parts to identify the flaws better.
by the lil bit sticking out I meant, the sleeve/shrink should be in proportion to be aesthetically pleasing. Lets face it sleeving only makes a rig look nice, Proper cablemanagement will rule out any need for sleeving in the first place. But even if you're going sleeving route, you'll soon come to learn that the sleeves need to be properly tucked inside the shrink to be anywhere close to good looking. So if you're doing it, get the whole rig in the mix. otherwise the sleeved extensions are another route.
I'd stay away from extensions cos they will add more wiring in the case+making tidying a lil more harder. And they cost more than to sleeve the thingy on your own. BTW, see if you can buy MDPC-X sleeve - they ROCK!
