I have a problem with my connection

Hi, I have a Belkin 802.11n Modem located in the room next door (very thick wall inbetween us). My laptop which has a HDA CX11270 Soft Modem picks up 54mbps connection speed from it, whereas my desktop only picks up 34 Mbps on a good day using Edimax 802.11n Wireless PCI Card. On my laptop I get 4-5 bars of connection and on my desktop I get 1 bar. I want to know how I can improve my desktop to have a connection better or the same as my laptop. Is there a way?
