Hardware acceleration problem

So I'm getting this apparently very common problem with not being able to play videos (from yourtube, etc...) on any browser.
The screen is green (the audio works), and then it freezes up the browser (Chrome crashes).

The solutions out there have said just pause it, right click, turn off hardware acceleration.
I find this hard to believe as the correct and only solution... my vid card drivers are up to date

I have an asus p8p67 (i5-2500k) with a Radeon 4850. I just upgraded to a SSD, and upon re-installing windows and getting the newest vid card driver/Catalyst software, I'm now encountering this problem

Any thoughts?

Obviously I have the latest browser as I've had to reinstall everything with this new config.
Same goes with Adobe

thanks....any other suggestions? it seems ridiculous that I have to turn off hardware acceleration just to watch simple youtube videos
