HP Pavilion M7334n

Hello,
I need to replace the motherboard. Do I purchase the MS-7184 or is there better alternative?

    Athlon 64 X2 (T) 3800+ 2.0 GHz
    Memory Installed 1 GB (2 x 512 MB)
250 GB SATA, TV tuner card with FM tuner

    Your Options:

HP motherboard. Don't know the price. If you buy this (or get a used one off EBAY) then your Recovery Media works and you can download drivers for your TV card, etc.

OEM MB. Transfer CPU, Memory, etc. You can find a good MB for less than $100, and you will be able to overclock your CPU. But you need a new backup solution, your recovery media won't work and you can't download HP fixes any longer.

New MB, CPU, Memory. For $150 you can get an AMD x3 + MB + Memory that will be much stronger than your 3800+

For $300 you can get an I3-2120, MB, Memory and have a very much stronger system. If you game add another $100 for video. But you'll have problems with installing drivers for your HP tatoo'ed TV tuner card and you'll need a new backup soln.

    New refurbished PC: HP Pavilion p7-1130z AMD A8-3800 2.4GHz 6GB 500GB HD 6450 for $280 here http://www.ubid.com/HP_Pavilion_p7-1130z_AMD_A8-3800_2.4GHz_6GB_500GB/a603327124.html

Or build a new system from scratch at whatever price point you want.
  2. Thank you for the reply.

I hadn't thought of the lack of drivers for the TV card or other drivers. I'd perfer to build my own system but finances are tiight so the MB from EBAY gives me a workable system without losing the TV card or who knows what else in this system is proprietary.

The refurbished HP Pavilion was my second choice, I didn't even know they had quad cores and I'm liking Windows 7 on my work PC. I'll bet AutoCad would work very nicely on it. Maybe next year.

    Thanks again
  3. "MB from EBAY" good. Make sure it's an exact model match. (Google 'hp code purple' of all things to see what happens when it's not a match).

Also, get some solvent to clean the CPU and some 'artic silver' thermal goop to reseat the heat/sink fan on the CPU when you transfer it.

(aside: are you sure you need new MB, that diagnosis is tricky... it's usually not CPU, but MB fails could be memory, card errors, power supply, ...)
  4. Good suggestions. I was able to purchase a MB Processor combo which is an exact match. I have the artic silver, expensive stuff.

This started out as a video problem.
