I recently brought a pack of 50 Princo discs that were marked A1.
I was told that the A1 discs were an improvement on the older princo
discs.
So far 4 out of 8 discs were faulty.
The retailer who sold me the discs said that it was a drive problem.
I'm using a Pioneer A06 drive and have had no other problems with
other brands of discs.

Is it a drive related problem or just bad media?
Would upgrading the ROM on my DVD writer likely to help with the
Princo disc problem?

I'm not familiar with the "Princo" brand.
But as one working in technology for a living for over 20 years,
I can tell you that cheap media (floppies, HDs, DVD, CD) have a short
life
and put more at risk than the extra $10 it takes to get quality media.
Because DVDs & CDs are so vulnerable, always make multiple and frequent

copies and store them safely and securely. If they're at all
important.

But it does apply.
It's a valid issue.

It's a lot more on-topic that a lot of junk in this NG, so don't worry
about that.

With my other hat on, the computing one - the retailer may be right, and
he may not. I haven't seen Princo disks here in NZ for quite a while.

A couple of observations: Most obviously, it's either the disks or the
writer. You may have a dirty lens in your CD writer, just enough to
produce errors on a disk which may need slightly higher laser energy to
write a Princo disk. How much use has the writer had, and have you a
CD-writer cleaning disk available?

Some writers have shown a rather short life, a year or so and then
dying, and there are reports on the web which suggest that A06 drives
(that model is a couple of years old now) are in that category. There
are also reports on CD's which suggest that Princo are among the better
disks.

Are the disks failing on being written, or on playback? Can you try
writing/reading the disks on another computer with a CD writer? It's
important to use another writer, as some read-only drives have trouble
reading some writable disks, and they won't read a disk that hasn't been
closed, or rendered readable when finishing the write sequence.

I suspect that the dealer is right, and you may be in for a new drive.

Brian:

I have a top of the line Plextor dvd writer and it often chokes on some
brands of discs (it particularly hates Memorex), so I am now very
careful about what I use, and generally stick to the quality brands.
Check with Pioneer to see if they have a list of recommended discs and
stick with them. It could be that the newer version of these discs just
doesn't sit well.

I've been using Princo 56x CDRs for a year or two now and have never had
a bad disc, compared to the Maxell which seem very fault-prone.

It may be your drive lens being slightly dirty - have you used a CD
cleaner at all?

I'd even say it's very on topic, because one needs to back-up their
images. I've had 2 hard disks going belly-up over time, but I also had
back-ups (multiple) of my important data, download-only applications,
and updates.

Princo, in my experience and from what I've read from others, is not
rated very high. The actual source may vary from batch to batch, so
you never know how well it interacts with the recorder. There are
typically certain types within brands (even big names) that work
better than others.

In fact I was quite satisfied with a certain type of Sony labeled
CDRs, even while they didn't qualify as most recommended for my drive.
The C1/C2/C3 error rates were very low, and tracking and jitter were
better than average and well within the limits. Then I bought a new
set of Sony's, and error rates (while still within limits) increased
10-fold! I obviously won't use those for anything serious.

Companies like Plextor provide such compatibility information, and
update their list and the writer's firmware to make automatic
detection of the dye type and source less error prone. If the media
are written with less than optimal laser power, the fail rate
increases.

That's not to say the writer can't be failing as well, but Princo
won't see the inside of my writers anymore. Incidentally, they are the
only ones I had trouble reading after 2 years of dark storage. Others,
like the discontinued Kodak InfoGuard ones (gold reflection layer and
stable dyes) still test with excellent results after 10 years.

I don't know if this
<http://www.plextor.be/download/ftp1/CDVDInfo.zip> little application
works with all writers that do a decent ATIP decoding, but it might
help in identifying unknown origin.
