Help fx 6100 or phenom 965

hi im looking for a new cpu my budget it £100 pound and was wondering which 1 will be better to game with.
i have a gtx 580 sc and would any of these give me a bottleneck?
also im looking at cpu coolers can anyone recomend one max £50 and would keep one of these processors stable at around 4ghz and will fit in a mid tower case with a side fan thanks

Both will hold back the GPU but at 4Ghz there is nothing to worry about.
Do you already have the AM3+ motherboard ?
If not buy intel. a cheap h61 and 2130 will be a better buy

That's actually a rather tough call. On the one hand, you've got a Six-core (although I hesitate to call it that) and on the other you've got a 4-core, but with complete resources. It's FX 6100 6 Integer/3 Floating Point vs. 965 4 Integer/4 Floating Point engines. Honestly, I'd probably just get the 6100, but only because the architecture intrigues me. Either will provide playable performance in just about any game. You'd probably have more overclocking headroom with the FX 6100, but that can't be said for sure.

My honest opinion is that the 61xx CPU's are just an abortion. The 4170 is the better choice for a FX CPU in that price range. Otherwise, get the 965BE (which is my actual recommendation).

yea i already have the motherboard. i will mainly be playing bf3 at 1080p but with medium or low settings as i prefere performance over looks

If you just bought a 580 no you will not be playing at low or medium LOL

It's 700Mhz slower than the 965BE and the extra 2 cores don't matter for gaming, so no.

Personally for gaming the FX-4100 is the best Processor you can buy from AMD. with the stock speed, and easily overclockable, I would be looking between the 4170 and the 965.

what would be a good cpu cooler for this got about £50 to spend

Evo is a little bit better, either one is a safe bet. I would not go with any other cooler, seeing as these will do exactly what you need for a great price.
