Hey all,

I'm attempting to build my first workstation for use with Maya and illustrator in mind, I don't really care to much about gaming for this build. Im really new to this so any suggestions on a good build would be awesome.

Approximate Purchase Date: Within the next 1-2 months

Budget Range: $1500-$2000

System Usage from Most to Least Important:creating 3D animations, creating 2d animations, rendering VFX, and editing 4k video.

Parts Not Required: I don't need monitors, sound card keyboards etc, just tower specs please

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Newegg, Amazon

Country: USA

Parts Preferences: Liquid cooling would be really cool, other wise no real preference.

Overclocking: Yes, if needed.

SLI or Crossfire: Not too sure suggestions would be appreciated

Monitor Resolution: 1920x1200 x 2

Additional Comments: I really could use any advice and help you guys have to offer, this is for school and I really don't want to screw it up

It's not really needed and I wouldn't risk it on a workstation build - it's too much risk for not a lot of payoff and you certainly don't want to spend all your overhead purchasing new PC parts.

Try this:

Case: Corsair Carbide 500R - $139.99
PSU: PC Power & Cooling Silencer MKII 950W - $149.99
Motherboard: Asus Sabertooth X79 - $319.99
CPU: 3.6GHz Intel Core i7-3820 - $309.99
Cooler: Noctua NH-U9B - $59.99
RAM: 16GB (4 x 4GB) G.Skill Ares 1600MHz 1.5V Quad Channel - $89.99
SSD: 128GB Crucial M4 - $159.99
HD: 1TB Seagate Barracuda St 7200RPM - $109.99
Optical: Lite On Bulk DVD Burner - $17.99
Video Card: EVGA Geforce GTX 680 - $499.99
OS: Windows 7 Pro - $139.99

Total: $1,998.82

A little bit over budget - but comes barely close to topping $2K - but with this you get X79 - perfect for RAM hungry programs like Illustrator and Maya - where you need as much RAM as you can get - and you get the 680 for CUDA rendering which will be helpful when using MAYA. I think it'll be far better suited to your needs than any SB or IB build will.

Well true - you could take my build and sub in the PNY Quaddro that Why_Me linked to or you could add a Fire Pro V7800.

Why Me's build is certainly more of what you are looking for. The video card and definitely the 950 watt power supply in gunits build have no place in a workstation that you are describing.

Whatever you do, don't get the GTX 680. Its architecture isn't made for computation (floating points) which are more important in modelling and editing then fps, which is important for games. The GTX 580 Fermi is a good architecture for computation. Get that instead (prices should be dropping).
