IDE drive replacement?

I need some basic advise. My Pentium 166 PC has a PCI IDE 3 Gb HD. I'd like to replace it with something a little larger (4 to 6 Gb) and faster, and use the existing HD to store back up files.

A lot of the drives I see for sale say EIDE. Does this matter? OR must I get an IDE drive?

How do I go about swapping the drives and getting everything on my current drive swapped over to the new drive, and use the new drive as the master?

EIDE is fine. Just unplug your old drive, make sure jumper settings are right on your new drive, and plug it in place of your old one. Oh yeah, and don't forget to plug in the power :)

THIS IS YOUR PC TECHNICIAN

As for the data swap, how you set up the second Hard Drive will matter. Will it have a seperate O/S or none? Will the drive be divided into different logical drives themselves?
how about quad boot software to get the most out of the O/S s out there? Just think about what you do, before you do it. Good Luck.

Just a simple answer: you have to have Norton Ghost or Ghost that comes with new harrrdrive (HDD) of from manufacturer's site (e.g. Maxtor) to mirror your stuff from old HDD onto a new one. You can mirror either the whole HDD or the partitions one by one. It's relatively easy to do mirrorring from a smaller HDD or partition (old HDD) onto bigger one (new HDD). Don't forget, you always must create the image from sourse DRIVE or PARTITION first, then mirror. I would rather format a new HDD before doing mirroring. But you might find it easier from the GHOST not format previously.

If you feel your system is OK, go with mirroring. From new install you computer possibly will gain some boost.
