New Build, 2k max.

Edit, 4/25/12

A few changes as my purchase nears. How's it look?

1.Corsair Carbide Series 500R Black Steel structure with molded ABS plastic accent pieces ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
Going to go with the Corsair 600T Black instead. It looks more solid and is a little bigger

2. COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 EVO
After looking at a LOT of pictures, I'm going to switch back to the Corsair H100, simply for aesthetics

3. XIGMATEK Cooling System Crystal Series CLF-F1254 120mm White LED x 2
Will not need these anymore. Going to stay with the fans that the case comes with, or should I get better fans? Keep in mind I'll have to remove the top fan to place the H100 there, and will be pushing air in from the top with the 2 fans the H100 comes with. 2 fans from the front pushing in, 1 rear fan exhaust

4. ASRock Z77 Extreme4 LGA
Getting the GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-UD5H instead, just for aesthetics again. Also, I've used Gigabyte in the past with great results with OC. Any reason I shouldn't get this board instead?

5. LG Black 12X Super Multi Blue with 3D Playback

6. Crucial M4 CT128M4SSD2CCA 2.5" 128GB SATA

7. CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) (Red)
Blue instead. Going with the blue theme now.

8. PC Power and Cooling Silencer Mk II 950W
Is this overkill? Does it run at 950w ALL the time? My concern is the electricity bill

9. EVGA 02G-P4-2680-KR GeForce GTX 680 2GB
Just picked this up today. Tiger Direct finally got it in stock.

Any suggestions before my final purchase? This will be my PC for the next 4+ years, so please help me out. I want to make it look as nice as I can, while keeping it cool and efficient.

Thanks again everyone! Can't wait to put this together. :sol:

Hello guys,

It's been several years since I last built a computer, and with Diablo 3 coming out, I decided it's time to build a new system that will last me another few years. Please assist me as I've been out of the scene for a while. Any advice is welcome, and thanks in advance.

Approximate Purchase Date: I'd like to purchase everything but the CPU as soon as possible. I'm waiting on the release of Ivy Bridge.

Budget Range: $2000 max. I cannot go above this limit.

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming, movies, internet

Parts Not Required: keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers, OS (Windows 7 Home Premium)

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: I've used mostly newegg and tigerdirect in the past, but I'm open to any website.

Country: US, California

Parts Preferences: by brand or type: No preference on brands as long as the parts are quality. I'd prefer a mid-tower as I don't have a lot of room under my desk (unless I will have cooling issues, etc, I'd go with full). I'd also like a 128SSD. Maybe a 2tb secondary HDD as well.

Overclocking: Yes

SLI or Crossfire: No, but I'm open.

Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080,

Additional Comments: Quiet if possible, but will not compromise quality too much. I'd like a sleek, black case, if the fans are lit, I'd like an off switch (it'll be in my room and I keep my pc on at all times), but if the case is really nice, I could just turn my pc off if it's too bright.

More about build
  1. Never buy products will big gaps between then.

You wont know if a part is faulty. also this looses the warrenty.

    The parts should bought together.

It will be better to wait till ive bridge release and till then many parts like gpu and hdd will be cheaper than today.

Also the gtx 600 series gpus will be release

ok the recommendation for your needs will be

intel i5 2500k it will be replaced by ive bridge i5
    asus z77 v-pro
    Cooler master hyper 212 evo
    corsair vengence 2x4 gb 1600mhz ddr3 ram
    evga gtx 680 2gb oc
    Crucial m4 128gb sdd
    seagate baracuda 3tb hdd
pc power and cooling silencer mkii 950w 80+ silver.
Corsair carbide 600t or 500 if not fitting under desk.
  2. Thanks Serial. That's great advice. The reasoning for me is that some items, such as the GPU may be out of stock. I'd like for my system to be up and running by May 15th (Diablo 3).

If I recall correctly, the mobo will work with both the sandy bridge and ivy bridge cpu's?

When would it be advisable for 16gb of ram vs 8gb ram? I believe it shouldn't cost too much more.
  3. Games uses 4-6gb if ram at the most.

So 16 gb will be overkill.

But if you are getting 2x8 gb 1600mhz ram for cheap why not.

    As for the motherboard

z77 will be better than z68 because.

It will be newer tech so now features will be present.

Pci 3.0 will be fully supported.

Usb 3 and sata 3 will be more integrated.

The launch of nf 300 chip for true pci 3.0 x16 sli.

The rivial of hd 4000 graphics.
  4. Let me know if I have the right parts, or if there's a cheaper source. Thanks!

  5. I don't know about the 600t, but I have the 500R and it is simply amazing. Everything is easy to install and cable management is a synch.
  6. Like the poster "Serial Killer" pointed out, it would be best to purchase all your components at once, especially seeing how the prices of SSD's and hard drives are dropping little by little every week.

  7. Thanks for the reply again guys! Anything I can upgrade to get the price between 1500 and 2000?
  8. a larger ssd would fine!
  9. i would buy a good monitor to get the budget to 1500$ or setup a eyefinity if you can :D
  10. eyefinity is great but you need more gpu power :P
  11. but 680 can handle 4 monitors but he cant play on max settings but he can always lower the settings :D
  12. but the reliaty is i hate tn displays.

i am waiting to launch the oled displays which will blow up the market of professional displays like ips and few others.
  13. I already have a 24" widescreen LED Asus monitor, so I won't be needing a new one. Also, I plan on using the HDMI out to my LED Samsung TV (only for movies though. I'll play games on my monitor)

Also, I already have Windows 7 Home Premium. No need for a bigger SSD as I will only have my OS, and Diablo 3 on there. I already picked up a 2tb Seagate HDD, so I think I'm ok in that area.

Are liquid cooling units (CPU) not recommended anymore these days?

Thanks again for the reply guys.
  14. Also, any huge difference between brand names for the GTX 680? Serial had suggested the evga gtx 680 2gb oc, while Why_Me had suggested the ASUS GTX680-2GD5.
  15. dknydiep said:

You can't go wrong with either brand imo. EVGA, Asus...both have good names. It comes down to price between those two cards...that or flipping a coin.
  16. That's good to know. I am very close to finalizing my list. What is your opinion on liquid cooling for the CPU? The 500r case that you recommended has a slot on top that fits the Corsair H100, or would you still recommend the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO CPU Cooler?
  17. If you're considering the H100 for WC, consider the Noctua D14. It performs the same but is about $20+ cheaper.
  18. i don't like closed loop coolers but don't think that D14=H100.
  19. According to http://www.guru3d.com/article/corsair-h100-review/7 the D14 is only 1C below the H100, but it is much quieter.
  20. I haven't had any experience with liquid cooling. Are they that noisy? I currently use the ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro and it's relatively quiet. Any idea if it'll be similar in noise range? The reason why I'm leaning towards the H100 is purely aesthetic, as it looks a lot sleeker than standard CPU cooler sizes. I don't mind spending the extra 20 bucks, especially if there won't be a huge difference in temp.
  21. Ok. So I think I've decided on these parts. How's it look? Anything else I can do to max performance and life of this PC? I have 1.5k to 2k to spend, and plan on keeping this 3-5 years. I do not need an OS, secondary HDD, monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers.

Corsair 500r case (black) (Any other case suggestions? I like a sleek look, and being able to look into the side of my pc) Also, should I buy any additonal fans for this case to add to the cooling? I'd like to keep the same look and get fans with a white LED, or no led at all.

Corsair H100 cooler (Simply like the look of it) If there any great reasons as to why the cooler master 212 is better (besides price), let me know.

    Intel Ivy Bridge i5-3570K 3.4GHz

ASRock Z77 Extreme4 LGA 1155 Intel Z77 (Any reason why the Asus z77 is better? It's about $100 more)

    corsair vengence 2x8 gb 1600mhz ddr3 ram

evga gtx 680 2gb oc (I also see a "super overclocked" version. Should I get this one instead? Price variance of 35 bucks)

    Crucial m4 128gb sdd

    silencer mkii 950w 80+ silver.
  22. bump!

LCS are fake liquid cooling
a good air cooler is enough to reach 4.5ghz with safe temps.H100 is total crap IMO,it cost $100+ but still stock fans are crappy.hyper 212 EVO is a great cooler for money, highly recommended.

everything looks grea but only two suggestions-
H100 isn't worth $100+.if you want a really good looking cooler then i think this is for you-
    http://www.amazon.com/Thermal-right-archon-armor-copper/dp/B004D1VULU/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&srs=2530612011&ie=UTF8&qid=1334296161&sr=1-3
other wise hype 212 EVO is still a great cooler it's price.you can easily reach 4ghz+ with it.
superclocked version is just a slightly overclocked version(you can achieve higher clocks by yourself :P )
  25. How's this look?

Corsair 500r case (black) (Any other case suggestions? I like a sleek look, and being able to look into the side of my pc) Also, should I buy any additonal fans for this case to add to the cooling? I'd like to keep the same look and get fans with a white LED, or no led at all.

cooler master 212 (i guess you guys finally convinved me)

    Intel Ivy Bridge i5-3570K 3.4GHz

ASRock Z77 Extreme4 LGA 1155 Intel Z77 (Any reason why the Asus z77 is better? It's about $100 more)

corsair vengence 2x4 gb 1600mhz ddr3 ram (after further research, it looks like 16gb is useless for gaming)

evga gtx 680 2gb oc (I also see a "super overclocked" version. Should I get this one instead? Price variance of 35 bucks)

    Crucial m4 128gb sdd

    silencer mkii 950w 80+ silver.
  26. The superclocked is more easy to overclock, so if you think ocability is enough to warrant $35, go for it.

    great build.
  28. I'm going to purchase the items this week. What else will I need? Thermal compound? Any extra fans (white LED to match the case if possible). Cable sleeves/loom for a cleaner look.

Can one of you pros please link me to the additional items that I'll need?

Thanks again everyone, You've been a great help. I'll make sure to post pics when I'm done.

    J
  29. your case has a great airflow.i don't think you need any extra fans.but if you want to have then just add a 120mm fan on top.i would suggest this fan-
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233051

stock cooler master thermal paste is good enough.sleeves are not necessary for cleaner looks, make sure you do your best at cable management.
have a good time with your rig.
  30. Just wanted to confirm that I won't run into any issues with the large size of the Corsair Vengeance and the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO CPU Cooler on the ASRock Z77.

Also, would you guys choose the blue version of the ram over the red version? I like the red color, but would it not mesh well with the black and blue colors of the PSU?

    Thanks!

I wanted to get closer to 2k. I believe this comes out to about $1600 after tax and shipping. Anything else I can get to improve?

  35. Yeah. Waiting on Ivy to come out. I've already included the cost in the $1600 total, based on the projected price of $225-$250.
  36. Well if you really wanted to spend a bit more money, you could wait for the 4gb GTX 680s to come out....
  37. ^there's no need for 4gb vram(unless you are running 3-4 monitors).
  38. PC Power and Cooling Silencer Mk II 950W ?

is it a bit too much?
im planning on a similar build but with this

    CORSAIR Enthusiast Series 750W V2
  39. no 750w is too much less power 850 is minimum and 950 w for oc headroom but dont always go on watts amps are also very important.

950w for 2 gtx 680. also its has an unbeatable offer :D
