Hello guys.
I would like to know your opinions on these 2 builds. My budget is $1200 (can go a tiny bit over).

Build 1:
2500k
Asus z77 http://www.scorptec.com.au/computer/45366-p8z77-m
Corsair 8gb
Sapphire 7850
Seagate 500gb 7200.12
NZXT Source 210 Elite
OCZ Fatal1ty 550W
LG 21.5" IP-S
LG dvd burner
Windows 7
=$1210

Build 2:
2400
Gigabyte GA-H61MA-D3V http://www.scorptec.com.au/computer/44959-ga-h61ma-d3v
Sapphire 7870
Same everything else
=$1180

The only thing difference as you can see is the overclocking potential of the Build 1. What do you guys think? Is the overclocking worth it? I want to be able to Max out BF3 and other demanding games @1080p.

Regards, :)

How is overclocking worth it? For gaming, isn't it much more heavily dependent on the GPU rather than the CPU?

Would a Zotac 570 w/ free Battlefield 3 be worth it over the 7870? Benchmarks don't seperate the difference that much.

Though both the builds are equally strong, I am leaning slightly towards the 2nd build; the reason being the $30 savings (which one could spend on something else) and a better CPU/GPU synergy. The first build probably provides more computing performance for the $30 premium, but 2400+7870 combo is no lesser than 2500k+7850 in real life gaming performance. A 7850 could bottleneck the 2500k when the latter is overclocked (to say 4GHz or more), which you would most probably do as it is the reason for buying the 2500K. The 7870 would work great with the 2400.

BTW I agree with truegenius about the performance difference between the two GPUs.

7870 is from the current generation whereas the 570 is from the previous generation. In the latest Gaming Chart hierarchy, 7870 > 570 and 570 = 7850.

The following pair would be my preference for a gaming rig in descending order:
2500k + 7870
2400 + 7870
2500k + 7850
2400 + 7850

Cheers!

7870 destroys 570 and competes with 580.

this 570 will costs only 261 after rebate and discount coupon, and this price difference is the cause of worth of 570 over 7870, but will definately use more power

btw how much this asus p8z77-m is costing you (link is not working), you maybe only only able achieve upto 4.5ghz on this board

yes, 6870 competes with 580 in performance.
But 570 is only around 15% slower than 6870 but cheapest 6870 is around 340$ and 570 is at 261. So it is a little better than 6870 (not in performance, but in performance per $ and in around 300$ budget)

also if anyone is not against the crossfire setup then 2x7770 will almost equals 7870 in performance but costs only 280$

I thought about CF 7770s as a value proposition but the fact remains it just is not a good deal of performance for the dollar vs 6850 CF

Overwhelming feedback, thanks guys!
I think i will stick to current generation cards since they consume less power and i cannot buy from newegg (i'm from down under).

Is it true that multiplayer is dependent on the CPU more than the GPU? i find this hard to believe...

@truegenius the asus p8z77 are $120 AUD + won't the 7770 crossfire micro-stutter? Tomshardware states that <6950 crossfire will result in micro-stuttering...maybe it isnt true for the current generation gpus...

And i really thought the 7870 crushes the 570, just like sinthoras stated. isnt the 7870 a match for the 580, maybe a tick below?

More advice welcome. Make this thread BIG ;)

regards, :)

7870 is clearly better than a 570 and I would not bother with 7770CF when the 6850s are faster and cheaper. Micro Stuttering can plague any multi GPU seup Nvidia or AMD regardless of what TH says about AMD

:pin my opinion, they are almost equal in pereormance per $, but 7770 is a little better than 6850 in performance and use less power, so i will prefer 7770:D

Well in reality 7770 are slower than 6850 and 6850 cost $20 to $30 less to boot. http://www.hwcompare.com/11925/radeon-hd-6850-vs-radeon-hd-7770/

Just want to know something...
truegenius more or less stated that bf3 benefits from good cpu in MULTIPLAYER but dependent on gpu more in singleplayer.

Is this true? if it is, where is your evidence? Wouldnt the 2400 be good enough anyway? And how much of an increase in fps would i get from 2500k oc'ed compared to 2400?

regards, :)

''And i really thought the 7870 is better than the 570''
--fixed it for ya;)
yup, refrence design(rd) hd7870 is better than rd gtx570 (around 15%) in performance for ideal game

''isnt the 7870 a match
for the 580, maybe a tick below?''
yup, rd hd7870 is equal to rd gtx580 in performance for ideal game

''Is it true that multiplayer is dependent on the CPU
more than the GPU?''
yup.

''won't the 7770 crossfire micro-stutter?''
yup.
Sli/crossfire both face this problem in any gpu configuration, thats why we avoid these and prefer single gpu

''More advice welcome. Make this thread BIG''
big post for big thread;)

hola,:D
how ya doing:p

i think
both setup have capablity to give you fps around 60, and it depends on settings too

Micro Stuttering is not always apparent and is on a "PER GAME" basis. It appears the people whom cry micro stuttering are the ones that have never ran a dual card setup because they where to scared or turned off from people like yourself whom regurgitate rhetoric some true some of it false about Micros Stuttering among other things. Can you post a link pleases where 7770 is faster across many games and cheaper than a 6850 before I put in my order for a pair of 6850s for some Crossfire goodness.

In you opinion ^ 7770 vs 6850 " they are almost equal in pereormance per $ " Well 7770 cost more than 6850 and performance slower than 6850 but thanks for providing me a link where you derived your false opinions. Edit oh thats right you did not supply a link to back up your false claims so that relegates you into troll status and how the hell did you make it to Vet status beats the hell outta me.

@truegenius
are you sure that multiplayer is dependent on the cpu more than the gpu? i find this really hard to believe...can you please provide genuine evidence to support your statement.

both setup have capablity to give you fps asound 60, and it depends on settings too
How can they BOTH give the SAME fps when the 7870 clearly outclasses it in terms of fps? Is this also because of the CPU? i just need you to reeaally clarify this and possibly give me evidence. because i would have to spend an extra $80 if i were to get the 2500k+z77 'cos i really want the 7870...
but if the 2400+7870 = 2500k+7850 in fps...i'll get the cheaper one.

Keep this thread going guys!

regards, :)

Donlt listen to that "truegenius" he is boarder lining on TROLL status and he defiantly has false opinions that he is trying to pass off as fact. Anyway that aside both your rigs you outlined in your OP will play BF3 just fine and dandy however just go for the 7870 and 2500K and save a bit longer if you have to it is worth it.
