The next generation Intel processor based on the Nehalem architecture is clearly exciting as VR-Zone has learned. Successor to quad core Yorkfield which forms part of the 45nm Penryn architecture, Bloomfield will come along and sit right on top of the 45nm Nehalem desktop processors in mid 2008. Bloomfield will have 4 cores and is capable of 8 threads like the old Hyper-Threading technology but only more advanced. Bloomfield will contain an integrated memory controller that requires a new socket refresh called Socket B with 1366 contact pads.

And I was just about to buy a kentsfield!!

Should I wait until this comes out? =p =p

p.s. I'm kidding. It sounds neat, and not terribly surprising about a socket refresh.

Nice. But I dont get one thing. Why so many contact pads? I mean from 775 to 1366 for a odmc. Thats a bit much.

From a 64 bit FSB, to a 128bit memory pathway (assuming dual channel) and some sort of onward connection to the rest of the system (possibly FSB again?)

If each DIMM slot has 240 pins then surely adding a dual channel memory controller should be 480 more pins? (its slightly less as some pins are NC and some carry power etc, but you see what I mean.

Seeing as S775 was originally designed for Single cores, its not surprising the pin cound has gone up, possibly to add room for future expansion to 8 or 16 cores etc....
