EVGA vs Galaxy 250GTS

Forum Graphics & Displays : Graphics Cards EVGA vs Galaxy 250GTS

I aim for some gaming, maybe Crysis and Just Cause 2 at medium settings 720p. Both of these are 250 GTS, though the Galaxy has a higher shader clock and while I do know that you should not base a video card's performance on it's RAM entirely, the Galaxy also has 1GB DDR3 versus the EVGA 512MB. I plan on dual-screening, playing games on only a single monitor however.

$40 after rebate

Galaxy Technology GeForce GTS 250 1 GB GDDR3

$65

Is the $25 increase justified in the Galaxy card? Do these cards perform well enough that the extra RAM may actually make a difference? Thanks in advance :)

Here is a Tom's article on how the 1GB model compares to the older cards. The EVGA card is going to have excellent support, but the Galaxy might have better performance for you. Realize that neither of these cards are going to give you great FPS in Crysis...

Thank you and I understand, though is medium settings with no AA at 720p much wishful thinking? Or should I invest in a better card? This is mostly for an HTPC build, but I do like to game on a side every now and then.

Well, look at the charts that I linked you. It shows how the performance is at certain settings. Most people like 36 FPS or higher, I prefer 60+ as I can see an extreme difference in 36 to 120. Some people can't.

How much gaming do you really plan on doing? If you do enough to consider a higher level card let me know and i'll try to link you some choices.

Thank you, I do not believe that I will be doing enough to consider a higher level card. The lowest resolution in those charts was 1280 X 1024, which is a tadbit higher than 1280 X 720, but there probably is not a substantial difference.

Suppose I were to invest in a card in the $100 range, however, what would be a good choice? If the performance gain is significant enough, I may consider it.

a 6770 would be a lot more powerful than a 250 in the $100 range.

The ATI 5770 is an excellent choice and Newegg is selling its last model for 100$ w/ MIR:

Though this card (and the GTS 250) are double slotters, so you will want to keep that in mind when your doing you system. Make sure you have enough room.

(Edit) As esrever says a 6670 is an even better idea as you pay even less and you can get single slotters:

galaxy gts 250 1gb works fine for crysis if you want to play on medium. i get average of 50fps on crysis on medium setting with my pentium d processor( on underclocked card) and the graphics looks pretty good. if you have good processor you may get better result.i bought it from ebay at $55
