I have all the parts to build my new XP/intel computer but would like to get this one running a little better on my cable internet, RoadRunner, if possible.
This old system is running 98se and the internet is running through a 10Mbs ISA NIC, through/from Roadrunners Ambit modem to my D-Link router, DI-804HV, then to the NIC.
RoadRunner Tier 3 Tech can’t help or explain why when just hooking the modem up straight to the NIC I’ll only run about 100kbs but when hooked up to the router I’ll run 1 to 1.7Mbps. RoadRunner also put in a new drop to the house this week and a new feed to the inside. Off the inside feed the line hooks directly to a 2 way splitter and one split goes directly to the modem. If I use my D-Link modem, DCM-202, I’ll get slightly better speed but not much.
I tried DSL and it runs about the same, at a cheaper price, and when their modem is hooked up directly to the NIC it will fly at about 2400Kbps to 2.6Kbps and loses through the router to about 1700 to 1800Kbps.
So, whats up with the cable? I’ve tried you guys pcconfig or ipconfig in Run but when the dos window comes up it disappears just as fast. Just as well as I don’t know what or how from that point anyway.
I would assume the MTU’s and what ever in windows are set favorable to DSL than Cable, but I haven’t a clue and don’t know how to go about any of this, but I would like to get this running better on the cable. When running through the router I would imagine the MTU’s and the DHCP is all being done by the router since the cable runs better this way but nowhere near RoadRunners 5Mbps top speed. I guess I should mention the DSL’s top speed is 3Mbps, the companies refer to it as up to that speed.
As for the Ipconfig, .....start->run->type command->black prompt type ipconfig, it will stay =).
Keep in mind you'll never reach top speed, its theorical.
Getting 1 to 1.7 on a 5mps link is pretty good IMO. For setting the MTU in windows, its done in the registry you can probably goole it! You can also modify the MTU in your router.
Don know if riser is still around, but I think he was the one talking about windows MTU being a bit too big and had to be splitted in two frames thus reducing performance(if I recall correctly)...
I would keep that D-link in between and with a up to date non-ISA card, it should do fine!
